Still trying to make sense of it all but PCB-mount case-less build sounds closer to expensive gasket-mount keyboards than regular case although I doubt not having a case contributes much. Both makes low-pitched reverb-less clean rounded sound and have softer bottom-out that’s addictive.
Loving the fact that there are enough unknowns in this hobby to be able to learn and discover new things still.
plain PCB builds have long been one of my favorite ways to go sound wise, I’ve been trying to design a case that properly captures the resonant properties of a caseless design while protecting the PCB and allowing for a cleaner aesthetic.
Thanks to this thread’s past discussion about Creams, I’m giving them a try for the first time, stock. It’s amazing how different weights of linears just feel like different switches altogether. Having tried 67g Tangies with 205g0, which are super buttery, the 70g springs are pleasantly heavier, to the point where I am reconsidering my stance on linears.
Not me. ‘Anti’ means against and I’m not into pushing back against things I don’t fully understand. I knew that many in this hobby appreciates linear switches yet they felt flat and boring to me.
At that point, one has two choices: “Urgh” or “Hmm”. I went with “Hmm” and started this thread.
I wasn’t against linears. I had started with tactiles and really enjoy them, and stayed with them for a while. Now trying something different. And my eyes are open a bit. And my wallet too.
I really appreciate the documenting of observations in this thread. They’ve allowed me to experiment with data beforehand, which is really great to have.
This is one of the reasons I enjoy this platform so much. It’s rife with thoughtful, descriptive impressions on products that are nearly impossible to try before you buy. This collective experience is invaluable. Mix that into our penchant for curiosity and experimentation (for science!) and you have one potent cocktail of expanding knowledge.
Do any of you use different switches on the same build?
It doesn’t look as pretty nekked; however, it’s not worth it for me to spend an extra $40 to put Tealios or similar on the F-row, arrows, number row, etc.
My last few builds have been lubed and filmed yellows on the number row, F row, etc., with my preferred switch spring combo on alpha’s and mod’s, and usually use a Healio or Silent Ink for the spacebar/s.
Usually not. But you for sure have an interesting setup there. Very neat.
I sort of do what you do, but instead of switches I leverage different spring types. (Progressive, Slow, DL, Giant) I generally shoot for a consistent weight throughout the board, but use a bouncy spring for alphas and a bit punchier one for everything else. Sound remains pretty uniform while softening alpha bottom out but still leaving room for a clacky spacebar.
I would second the bobas more than the cherries honestly, both will sound great, but with the known issue of UHWMPE stems being a little smaller than usual stems, I would think you might get lower wobble in boba housings than cherry.
Damn I just used the last of my Cherries and my Bobas are planned for another build. I think since I don’t want to buy new switches just for the housings I’m going to end up putting these in a BSUN Nylon housing.
