Havent tried Nylon for a plate yet but PP is great IMO. Its the sofest out of PC, POM, & itself. It also has a deeper sound signature than both. I definitely recommend giving it a try if you like softer plate materials & deeper sound signatures!
Nylon is a nightmare. It changes in dimensions significantly from temperature and moisture. And it doesn’t always change uniformly… sometimes just part of the plate is a millimeter off.
Sounds like a nightmare for sure. Tha ks for the heads up! I was thinking of getting a nylon plate cut by Hype but will probably pass now.
My co-workers call me an “abusive” typist, I’m sure because of how heavy handed I am. I’m a demon on the keyboard sometimes, admittedly. Most of my keebs are tray mount with steel, brass or aluminum plates but I do have one top mount with PC plate. Sure, it’s springy and soft but I don’t feel like this is an advantage for me. Though it is comfortable the longer I type, my accuracy suffers. And I’m not super accurate to begin with, my favorite key is bckspc
I ised to be the same way, but I prefered the feel of softer boards. Now im the opposite, bad accurate on stiff builds!
I have been going mostly plastic for a while now. I don’t think I really have a preference, when it comes to POM vs. PC vs. PP. I enjoy muted sound of POM, but I don’t think I really have a preference.
Recently I have started experimenting with ALU again, and I think done right it is nice. I think it helps to have a good quality soft aluminum (I believe there are a couple different types), and then I like to pair that with a gummy o-ring mount. I haven’t tried a top mount with alu, despite having a board that good do it. I think I will just safe that for plastic plates.
FR4 is a good middle ground.
One surprise I had recently! I got the Glarse’s MX Purples, and wasn’t really wowed by them. Sold them to a local guy who put them in a Sinne, and wow did they shine in that! I don’t know if I would like it long term, but typing on it at the meetup made me re-think brass a little bit. I think that is another one where if you got good quality brass, with the right switches (probably Cherry), I think it would be worth giving another shot.
I should probably invest in a good top/gasket mount board like Keychron Q6 Max and fit with a PC plate, but the price kills me. I know I whine about the lack of full size customs all the time but I really do wish we had more options there.
I have such a wide variety of boards with every kind firmness/softness imaginable. So much depends on the switch that it’s really hard for me to say exactly what I prefer. In general, a quieter, more lubed experience on a firm board (aluminum or brass top mount) and a clackier switch on a softer mount (gasket or pin mount). But there is always the exception.
The one thing that I’m fairly sure about is that I prefer tactile and clicky on a stiffer mount.
As they say, variety is the spice of life. Sometimes you want the steak, other times, the chicken or the lamb…
I guess that applies very much to this hobby and why we mostly have a bunch of keyboards - different colors, different layouts, different mounting options, swapping out different switches, different keycaps, etc.
