For smaller keys in the 40s/ortho set, it just says “Enter” since “New Line” didn’t already exist in those sizes, and we wanted to avoid making any new molds. The numpad Enter says “Line Feed” for the same reason.
EDIT: For SMRT, I want them all to say “Return,” but that depends whether it will fit, or if molds exist for the smaller 40s/ortho variations. Those may wind up saying “Enter” if there’s no “Return” mold or an issue with the legend fitting. I’d need to talk to SP. Numpad says “Enter” and ISO just has an arrow icon, keeping with the majority of the original Wyse boards.
Okay nice, I love that dasher night version, I just want to say that, even though I love to retain old-school vibes and understand that ‘return’ is a residue from the typewriter’s formality, the original dasher uses a ‘new line’ enter key. So, to keep it as close as possible, I hope you can keep the ‘new line’ hehee
This set is shaping up to be the most interesting thing happening in keycaps right now.
To answer your question, as Rob27shred said, DCS moves it into must-buy territory.
I was actually enrolled in the 2020 Moogle kit buy. The GB-runner left because other things came up, and also some keycap harvesters threw away a lot of NOS Wyse keycaps that would have made the project more viable.
I was actually asked if I wanted to take over the GB, but I felt that I was not in a position to do so at the time. The original GB runner has shown no interest in continuing that project, so I think it’s fine to proceed.
DCS WYSE isn’t something you find much anymore, either old or new-production, so this GB is particularly valuable.
Thank you! Yeah, I’ve made multiple attempts to contact him through various means, and haven’t gotten a response. He hasn’t posted on any keyboard communities or social media for four years. So I was going to proceed under the assumption he had nothing further planned, and that since he publicly posted he’d be happy to hand it off to anyone back in 2020, he wouldn’t be offended now.
Hopefully he’ll be pleased if something comes of it, and I’m more than happy to credit him.
It’s funny because I have very little interest in using any 40% keyboards, but their users are my best friends for kitting out my home builds. Moving away from my own desire for 1.25u Caps Lock and lots of short spaces, this should be a very useful bit of kit and would be appreciated, though I think most of the designs have an Escape for that 1u R2 key. Apologies if it’s already there in your other pics.
I struggle with anything under 64-key (2u Shift and arrows) 60% layouts myself, so my knowledge of 40% layouts is pretty much drawn from how I see other sets being kitted, and the inevitable complaints I see on GeekHack interest checks about missing keys.
I did put a 1.25u R3 Caps Lock key into the SA version. I’ve seen (and used) it before, and wanted a way to put Caps Lock on the bottom row like some Wyse boards did. But I didn’t include it in the DCS version. I couldn’t find any existing DCS sets that had it (granted, I didn’t spend a ton of time looking) and thought it must be omitted usually for some reason. Like maybe DCS users just never use that particular layout, or the mold was never made?
In both versions, I have a column of 1u novelty keys with classic Wyse legends, meant to fill out a 65% or 75% right column. But they’re also there to be rando Any Keys to help flesh out 40s/ortho boards, in the event a full 40s/ortho set isn’t produced. The legends vary slightly between the SA and DCS versions because DCS uses “Do” as the novelty Esc key in its Yellow Alert kit, and I didn’t want to repeat it.
So I feel like I’m ready (ish), and decided over the past couple week that I want to try giving the DCS version a first stab at getting made, since people have been waiting on a moogle kit for some time, and it’s the original Wyse profile. The Geekhack interest check is live!
So the feedback was actually pretty helpful and friendly! The bad news is that someone else was imminently launching their own DCS moogle kit, and already has vendors lined up. I was defensive and skeptical at first, but we talked, and they seem legit, and it was just a case of really bad timing.
I paused my DCS effort in favor of theirs, and I’m going to move forward with the SA version instead, implementing the feedback I got from the short-lived DCS IC. So more standardized mods, combining and reducing the number of kits, etc. I’m going to work on that and relaunch.
Hey all! So it’s been a while, but DCS SMRT is happening soon! I’ve submitted finalized kitting to Will at SP based on feedback I’ve gotten on their Discord server over the past week, and updated the IC over on GeekHack to match. SP likes it, so I think we’re good to go.
It sounds like a pre-sale may happen later this month, as they’d like to act quickly. I’m still hoping to someday run the SA version, but for now I’m happy to get SMRT out in any form, and finally break the long Wyse replica curse.
Ever since I first pitched it to them earlier this year, they’ve wanted to run DCS first; I think because there’s pent-up demand for it among folks who bought vintage boards and need moogle keys, and because it’s a piece of SP’s history.
I’ll make a push for SA eventually. Right now they still have Dasher Nights in stock, and between DCS SMRT and Selectresque coming up, I don’t have the bandwidth to work on it much anyway. Whenever it does happen, I want to make sure I can give it plenty of attention.
Will has certainly made some good decisions at SP. Their marketing is finally on point. Plus the website is actually getting better! Exciting stuff for fans of SP keycaps.
Thank you! I still can’t believe I’ve had two designs go on sale in under one month. (And that they plan to get these out the door by late January!) After all the drama this summer, I’m happy to finally get some Wyse replica caps into people’s hands.
Thanks! I really expected these to take 5 or 6 months to make, so seeing they’ll be shipping in 10 weeks (barring any issues) is really impressive. I don’t even know if part of that time is just waiting for resin to arrive.
