You are correct. You need a usb-mini or c daughterboard. The universal daughterboard doesn’t fit nice in the Leopold stock case.
The designer of the nt pcb, evyd13, released a usb-c daughter board for much of the Leopold line Fc980c/m fc750r fc900r. This one has the oem connector and the qwiic connector.

No.
Programmability requires custom pcb or a controller. The usb daughterboard is just a passthrough.

Would anyone have an extra nt-980 PCB and FR4 plate I could buy from them for a Heavy 9 build?

I finally built up my NT-980. I had been waiting for GMK Rainy Day so I could match it with the Norbauer Aperture finish. Used the usb-c db, and the little mounting support brackets from Dave 
.
This build with Kiwis in the purple POM plate (and plate foam, recommended for the extra structure) this has been an absolute dream for the last couple weeks.

I got the both the POM plate and the plate foam from Jake at P3DStore. I just uploaded the same plate file for both

Hello Dave! Thanks for all these contributions; this thread is a great resource. You don’t happen to have any extra pieces (PCB/DB/plate) from your mini GB, do you? If so, let me know.
Otherwise, I’m posting here in the thread to see if anybody would like to have some PCBs/daughterboards/plates ordered. Just got a 980M and would love to have it modded with alternate layouts instead of the standard one.

Hello! Sorry to say no extras left.
Did sell my last 6 usb-c daughterboards on Conical discord at $8 ea to cover some R&D over the last couple weeks. They did sold in about 1 day. Just incase anyone makes a GB there is some potential interest in that for my Topre friends. Those daughterboards are relatively expensive for example ordering 5 assembled is like $30 but 15 assembled is like $40.
Edit: Yesterday I did a quick mock up of the price these yesterday it was like $150 and today drop down to $85… The mcu atmega32u4 AU drop from $20 to $6 that is the cheapest for at least a year. I will make a small correction to the full solder gerber & production files tomorrow to include the JST connector for underglow and USB connection for those who don’t want to solder that part themselves.
Edit 2: Full solder Git Hub files have been updated to version 1.3 to include the jst/qwiic connectors for assembly production files. JLCPCB Gerber view in the order process shows up wacky but it is properly manufactured.
