I agree to a point. I think we’re looking at it from different angles - you’re looking at a longer term re centering and de-extremization, whereas I’m just talking about making it clear what behavior will and will not be tolerated in the community. There’s absolutely a time and place to talk to racists and change their minds, but in situations like this, I don’t think it’s the right road.

I’m not advocating use of shaming willy nilly. I see Diversity and matching Tolerance as fertilizers for community culture. I’m saying there are limits, in what a community can do as well as how effective they can be. Elevated discussions are fine but it’s not an infinite blanket that can cover all issues and misbehaviors. In my experience, discussions and mantras are in-effective in dealing with trolls and bigots.
