What did you get in the mail today? (Part 2)

Damn now I gotta order some MX Acer switches from Switch Oddities :upside_down_face: very cool pick up Goat! I wonder what they were gonna release, must’ve been fairly high end (well high end in the gaming space most likely…) for them to go as far as having KTT brand switches for them. As just chucking some regular red, black, brown, blue Content or Nopoo switches in whatever would’ve been infinitely cheaper.

I knew that they reminded me of something!

They have those ‘pre-synthetic dyes’ colours.

They might look like Mahjong tiles, but they feel like how you would imagine cheap plastic piano keys to be.

It’s an amazing set for the price, but not everyone will appreciate the surface texture. Closest thing I can think of to it is KCH Nekoccino. Which are also glossy in feel, and may have raised legends. Maybe similar manufacturing practices.

Also, I wrote above that the keycaps don’t transmit light very well. But that’s because I usually run at no or minimal lighting. There are images from people who cranked up their lighting, and these keycaps illuminated respectably.

Oh just to clarify - Barrett is helping me get the rest of the parts for this keyboard. He’s around and responsive! He’s just trying to do business with tarrifs and the state of the world. He did/does make improved versions of the KL-90 out of wood and supplied/s improved versions of the PCBs. He had a group buy at the end of 2024 that some of us decided to go in on knowing we would likely not get the entire keyboard from the OG group buy runner if we got anything at all.

The person who dropped this group buy is Kiko from Kiko Labs and his supposed friend, Ryan, who took over Kiko’s email and discord accounts and told us he isn’t Kiko - he is Ryan stepping in to help Kiko. And he’s strung us along for a while.

Today I got memories in the mail.

I bought a closet clean out box from someone I’ve traded with over the years and while I did expect to get a few things back, I did not expect to get my original MagicForce68 keycaps back from like 8 years ago!

Time for a retro build?

Man the Magicforce boards are a huge throwback! One of the first boards I got way back when! I remeber getting one with Gateron Greens LOL. I also remember that custom Krelbit ran the Slipline I think he called it. Still kicking myself for passing on that…

Ahh ok that makes more sense since you mentioned Barrett in your original message of people who helped, I didn’t realize the KL-90 was not originally his board and from Kiko Labs (makes sense given the “KL”-90 name lol)

Just received and installed some Ambient Bokeh switches from Lowpro KB. The weight on these is just perfect. I’ve been spring swapping 50g sprits into other Ambients, but to get that weight stock is very nice.

Got my little order in from Switch Oddities. I had to grab a couple of those Acer switches after Goat showed them to us, surprisingly they’re actually pretty decent. Shame they never released them. Wonder if I could get enough of the yellow linears to do a TKL build somewhere? I also got 2 Gateron Fei Matchas as I sold my batch a long time ago & never keep any extras for my switch collection. Then 2 Gateron x Sillyworks Type-Rs just to try them & have a couple for my collection. They’re definitely an interesting switch, almost a topreish/rubber domeish feel to them since the bump goes through the full travel of the switch. Wouldn’t mind using them in a build sometime if I could find some for a normal price (Switch Oddities very rarely sells switch in bulk afaik).

If you get a set of Type-Rs, make sure to get them from a state-side vendor with a good return policy and check them in a build within the return window.

Apparently most of them are just fine, but a minority of them (presumably an initial batch) are horribly chattery. I bought a bag and didn’t test them for over a month, so I was out of luck when it turned out I happened to have a chattery set. :stuck_out_tongue: I plan to get another set eventually because I really do enjoy the typing sound and feel! Snappy and loud, but not at all harsh, and of course that full-width tactile event.

Got you, thanks for the heads up bud!

Whooaaa that is an awesome idea to integrate/add the DB into the main PCB and let you snap it off if you need a DB for the specific board you are using the PCB in.

LINKY87 TKL

I am utterly floored by the quality of this TKL, which retails for about $40 USD + shipping, or 68-88 CAD.

The keycaps, switches, and stabilizers are on par with, or superior to a 2018 Leopold FC900R PD, while costing much less.

The keycaps are PBT doubleshot, the legends aren’t raised above the keycap blanks. These would have been considered ‘God-tier’ a few years ago. Switches are creamy linears, requiring no work. Stabilizers are impeccable.

While I don’t know about the quality of the electronics, and the longevity of the board, and its plastic case may feel cheaper than a Leopold, there is no way you would have able to purchase this level of quality for under $120 USD a few years ago.

It is basically a factory, stock, creamy keyboard. I don’t build or buy for sound, but for those who do, it is ready-made. I suppose keyboards like this one will force custom builders to up their game, to have a more ‘custom’ and ‘unique’ sound.

Here is a quick sound test:

Please keep in mind that my mic makes the keyboards thinner sounding, more higher-pitched, peaky and and crackly than they are in real-life. The real keyboards sound deeper and fuller.

Damn that thing thocks! Especially considering your mic makes it sound thinner than IRL. I definitely agree with you that this board seems like a great deal if it holds up well.

Yeah, it’s funny, there’s almost no reason to buy a different super-budget TKL.

Unless you need flex more than thock, which I do, which is why I also have another budget TKL. And for aesthetic reasons, people might want something other than a white or beige TKL.

I guess what I’m saying is that this is dominating the thock-per-dollar TKL segment right now.
