What are you keyboard-related resolutions for this upcoming year? new build? want to try out a new keycap profile? Want to try out a new layout? Gonna go ergo? Gonna go ortho and forget the haters? Feel free to share what you want to accomplish this year in keyboards
I’ll start:
New reviews for keyboards & keycaps
Finally get a FRL TKL (not sure if I want alps or MX compat yet)
Try out a new ergo layout
I plan to send the two Aquanaut cases for manufacturing. Also need to write firmware for the two PCBs that I made for them: one for an MX build and another for a Topre build using Cipulot approach.
Those will be my new beater boards, one at work and one at home.
I will also resume my work on the Leyden Jar controller.
For information @Ellipse selected it for it’s future F122, B122 and B104 keyboards.
On the new features to work on:
split keyboard support.
PS2 interface support to connect the keyboard to an old computer.
Ooo that reminds me - I want to have a torrefied wooden plate made.
@PenguinMoe As for ortho haters, I think it’s mostly a reaction to the unfamiliar - kinda like, “wait, you put PINEAPPLE on pizza?!” but when some folks try it, they have a new favorite.
This is the year I’m going to build all my boards. For as many as I have built (not all of which do I consider their final form), there are close to four times as many unbuilt. It’s even worse for switches – I need to get lubing. So many boards were purchased during the pandemic years, all going undelivered for a similar timespan, and now have piled up. I also have three Topre boards to mod. I swear my hobby for the last few years revolved more around buying keyboard related goods than using them. It’s time to be the hobbyist that got me here.
While the physical organization of my collection is handled, I really need a better digital catalog of everything that I own. There are a couple of spreadsheets laying around, but I haven’t consistently updated them. I think it’s time I implement notion db’s like @pixelpusher and others have.
Stop buying things until I’ve caught up at least. The dopamine hit isn’t worth it, if the goods just get enqueued into a backlog.
First things first, for 2025 I plan to sell some keebs that are in the drawer for a long time. Big plan is to reduce the count from 18 to my top 3! No need for more.
Then I got this idea for a design of a boulder gym themed keycap set. When I visited a gym for the first time I was totally fascinated by all the colors on the walls. So hopefully by mid of the year I have something up for an interest check that catches these first impressions.
Also I got some topre conversions coming up, especially I like to convert my W1-AT.
Finally get one of my sets made- I’ve got two in IC, one nearing “IC ready,” and like 4 more that are “Idea complete” that I need to follow through on. One is just at the conceptual stage.
Get more Pantone/RAL books or SP color chips to continue to make more sets.
Other than that- continue to try new keyboard stuff. I’ve got a WT60-C PCB that I need to turn into a keyboard.
Think of some fun medium range projects once I become a PhD Canidate.
I think my resolutions for this year in the hobby will be three different things I’d like to accomplish.
To reorganize my storage solutions. Build some shelves to display the KBs I want to display & either buy or build another rack for storage.
To get even more involved in my local community, start helping to organize our meetups & help planning out other events.
This is the big one to me, to host a build meetup. I’ve had the ideal in my head for awhile & really think it would be fun & different to hold a meetup based around building KBs instead of just to show off your stuff. I know this is gonna be a challenge to find a venue for, but fortunately our local group is not so big yet. So I’m thinking of possibly hosting it at my house or if a lot of people are interested maybe renting out a pavillion in my local park & doing it outdoors. Still gotta figure out the logistics of doing something like this, but it is something I really would like to do.
