I would just worry about domes being in compressed contact with dialectric grease for extended periods of time, say 6 months or more.
Havenāt had the time yesterday and this is about modding.
What I really love about Topre and JP layout is the flexibility of the bottom row.
The only limit is our imagination, a quick collage of some older pictures, even 6.5u works fine, but thatās way too big for me.
Sweet setups!
How did you do the 2u Right shift & longer spacebar mods?
2u is possible as POS keycaps.
Iāve bought a couple of these for cheap a few years ago for harvesting and fooling around.
Kassentastatur = Point of Sale.
Spacebar, 2u, whatever size, you might have to become creative
Some hints:
4.5u spacebar as example. Keyboard disassembled, middle key as usual with dome and spring, outer keys, left and right without domes and springs, just the sliders working as stabilizers.
This is only going to work if you attach the spacebar, keyboard disassembled, otherwise the outer ones canāt be attached.
This way Iāve built myself a 6u SA spacebar many years ago for a Realforce as example:
The first one, picture shown, wasnāt perfect, but you learn from trying and get better!
I hope this helps to let your imagination fly!
Question about stabs; I only have one Topre board and Iām not using it very often, but a while back I lubed the stabilizers with dielectric and after a while some of the lube worked its way up on top of the right and left side of the stab (through the holes there?) causing keys like shift/backspace to stick terribly. The only way to fix it was to remove nearly all of the lube. What did I do wrong?
I had this happen to me a few times, I ended up wiping it all off and putting less of the dielectric grease when re-inserting the wire. Nowadays when I lube my stabs, I put just enough to coat the contact points between the wire and the stem.
There was also one time that I put gasket-maker instead of dielectric grease. It was really bad.
Omg lol that is way not good. And thank you! I will be very conservative next time.
Jesus are you preparing for a keyboard horror movie?
But honestly not bad!
Question: If keyboard x
will get Deskeys domes (weight TBD) + silencing rings (thickness TBD) + tuning, are there any meaningful reasonsāaside from cost and MX slidersāto pick the R2 PFU over the R2 RGB (or vice versa) to be x
?
RGB duh
In all seriousness, I think thatās the allure of the RGB: the MX sliders. If youāre content with Topre caps then the best pick is the PFU Topre. You also wouldnāt have to go through the hassle of tuning stabs on the RGB and buying/placing silencing rings
question for the topre folks.
So i have a realforce rgb tkl and I was wondering why the bottom out feels so much different from something like a fc660c? I think they are both metal plates.
The bottom out of the realforce rbg tkl feels smooth and soft with some thock vs my fc660c which has a sharp and thocky bottom out.
Hopefully someone knows!
Hey, sorry I got back to you so late! I wanted to switch off the two Topre boards you were talking about.I think you have to take everything with a grain of salt because Iām sure our setups are different.
What mods have you done to your boards or is it completely stock?
My realforce RGB was gasketmaker-modded, lubed, and silenced. Itās also sitting in a norbaforce housing. My fc660c is also sitting in a h6 housing, silenced, and lubed. From what I can tell the RGB does feel a tad bit smoother. I suspect that this is due to the housing. From what I remember when my RGB was still stock was that it was smoother than the 660c but the sound was atrocious due to the rattling housings. Even with lube, the RGB is ever so slightly smoother than my other boards.
Thanks for the info on your experience.
As for modding, I just lubed rails, added deskeys rgb silencing rings, and added some foam to the norbaforce case.
Good to know that the rgb does feel smoother to other folks and not just me.
I havenāt really noticed rattling on the housings, but given the energy to pop all the housings off Iāll give gasket mod a try later lol.
Quick build note: I put the pink deskey domes in the RGB today, and I had a moment of doubt when I realized that the deskey domes donāt have cutouts for the LEDs. But itās a non-issue. The domes still sit perfectly fine, and although I donāt use RGB lighting, the lighting still works through the deskey domes.
Oh thatās good to know! I really hate cutting out slots for the LEDs. I donāt even use RGB that often.
It could also depend on which 660C version you have. The older models that were manufactured in China were known to be a little bit heavier and snappier than other 45g topre. The 660C that I have is in this camp and feels more tactile to me than my 87u with 55g domes.
That said, when I put in the gasket, Iāll cut some led slots to A/B test and Iāll report back here.
if you can find the right size hole punch that might work
