Word through the keycap grapevine is that Drop.com is closing.
I was going to paste the same image as the GH link.
Curious what this will mean for Geekhack as well. I doubt it is pricey, but I don’t think Corsair wants it.

I’d love to see the message header on that email. The site is still up, but it seems like the first step to shutting down business would be to let the suppliers know.
It’s a shame in a way, I loved them as Massdrop, but once they changed to Drop they lost the plot. I feel like they made a lot of unforced errors that seemed to be symptoms of arrogance on their part. I know they lost me on the ham-fisted attempt to rebrand MT3 and introduce an alternative history around it.
That isn’t to say I haven’t checked back in from time to time. What I saw suggested a good deal of stagnation. I could never see how a large company like Corsair would be able to successfully comprehend and operate a niche marketplace like Drop.
I saw that it looks like there is Drop products on corsair’s product page/store now too.
I totally agree with you, but I feel like they were always going to loose the plot. I was just commenting somewhere else how it was funny that for a time mass dropping (in general) was a thing. Technology eventually caught up and I think more niche communities can just reach out to places now.
Another thing that was interesting. Just a few days ago the following popped up in my algorithm - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ARFGVjPgLo0
The TDLR is that Corsair made an experience and board that is inferior in a lot of ways to Drops’ options. Only for this news to come out.
interesting development.
That Corsair board is disgustingly expensive wth, mind you I only jumped around the video for like 5 secs but I’m pretty sure it’s probably not justified at all.
News at 11!
Yeah it is awful, and again it was really surprising cause they are cannibalizing better options from Drop. You would think this is a board that appeals to people that walk into Best Buy or some other big box electronics store, but you can’t really do that cause they have a “maker” type website…
but on the plus side… clearance items maybe! ![]()
Definitely not the same Massdrop as when I joined the hobby, but sad to see another one of the OG pillars potentially disappearing. Makes me feel old in the hobby.
Secondary thought… if they do close down, does that free up MT3 again or does it die with Drop? Maybe that IP transfers to Corsair?
We stage a Coup d’état to take MT3 back ourselves, that’s what.
So full disclosure, I completely half-assed this research, but in pulling up Corsair’s latest annual report, I don’t see any legal entity related to Drop, just listed as a brand and an adjustment from the acquisition. I think it’s already been completely integrated, meaning Corsair can already do what they want with whatever rights they hold to MT3. Interesting that they specifically talk about tooling in the email. My first thought is that whatever factory has physical custody of the molds right now might get first dibs at buying them.
They had a good start I guess but didn’t really use them too much after the Holy Panda saga and of course the HaaTa ordeal.
Even The Verge has picked up the news: Corsair is halting Drop sales after March 25th | The Verge
IIRC matt3o retains IP rights for MT3, so if another manufacturer and source of funding were available, it could be made and sold elsewhere. Drop / Corsair owns the tooling they had made and can keep using it (or not) through Tera Plastics.
Since Hoffman is still with Drop/Corsair, I think geekhack is fine as long as he’s still around to keep them in check for any errors with the site.

RIP Drop, not always the greatest but of course a pillar of the community early on.
Man… I still havent got time to buy my ALT foam kit (that they havent resupplied for like several months now)…
