I love your idea of extending the pins. Not only does it solve the height problem, but saves you from having to create or buy a new PCB. I was thinking of using the precision socket pings to make them at least semi-hostswappable. They come it varying sizes and are long enough that it’s possible to coax them into place by bending the legs.
