Has HHKB ever released any keyboards that are 30g?

not really sure what to make of this info

yep felt. :joy:

Sometimes if feels like there is more play, but it could also just be the difference in sound between the two.

right. IMO basically you have oem topre roundedness, bass, quietness (from the silencing rings) against or next to a much louder dome where youre going to hear plate, keycap, slider, and sometimes spring noise amplified. even if you have the same silencing ring on the astrodome its going to sound “rattley” or crunchy or louder and not as smooth as rounded sound oem topre domes

Does this mean in theory I would need thicker silencing rings if I want to continue to use these?

….
Like I said, I feel like my working theory is that the BKE Shiner domes must just have a 1mm or so difference with force pushing the keycap up, and that tiny bit just makes them feel more rattle-y.

hence why i provided the info regarding how BA designed the domes (if that matters or makes sense to you/or someone else.) he said not to ring them (per his preference/design intention.)

your personal experience is that they feel “1mm” short of pushing the keycap up.

type-s comes with 0.5mm poron rings, you could potentially add thicker silencing rings, but then you might affect the travel distance of the slider (aka now it feels too short of a key press or too shallow for your tastes)

again, idk, but this is the kind of devil in the details i enjoy, and to your earlier comment in the thread that people in the community server were having a hard time explaining/or were less than forthcoming describing how domes and shit interacts is bc of the difficulty above. i generally enjoy this kind of discourse, but its also hard when i dont know where the other person is coming from or what they want to change or whether we even share the same language and concepts as far as understanding topre/ec

end of the day youre like nope, back to OEM topre style which i believe the metakeebs RS (red series) dome is their more “oem” like offering.

• Red-Series (RS): Medium, rounded tactile feedback—similar to OEM Hybrid Snow domes.
• Blue-Series (BS): Modeled after OG-BKE, featuring a heavy, pronounced tactile bump.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head with this, I had the same problem with my astros but never really took the time to look into it until now.

Compared to oem domes astros come in at an average of .2mm shorter. Oem being 7.5mm tall and astros at 7.3mm.

The length of the barrel on hhkb type-s sliders is 9.3mm and change (for reference the barrel length on non silenced versions is 9mm)

In its stock form the type-s has .5mm rings which means that from the factory it comes with .2mm of precompression. (Full travel being 4mm on non silenced topre the type-s has 3.8)

Just as you suspected there’s a good chance the problem your having is the domes being too short. The solution Id recommend would be replacing your .5mm rings with aftermarket .7mm rings to get back that factory precompression. Adding .2mm rings on top of your .5mm rings might also work but I haven’t personally experimented with ring stacking yet so I cant vouch for its effectiveness.
