Hello every glad to be here

Hello, while I am not new to using keyboards. I am new to this area of mechanical keyboards and all the customization of them. I currently am awaiting my first one. Since I am a noob to this I opted to go with a Keychron V1 wired + knob.
I am really looking forward to this adventure.

Welcome! We’re a small but fun and very welcoming community here, and this is one of the best keyboard platforms for taking people as they come and just nerding out in a positive way — one of the few online places where I think everybody really considers the real person behind the other keyboard.

As for Keychron, I have heard a few more battery complaints of late, but that obviously won’t be an issue for a wired board, and frankly I think it’s as likely to be an issue of simple numbers as they’re getting recommended everywhere these days. The V series remains a really good and nice-looking choice IMHO, with enough customization ability to really explore that side of the hobby to see if grabs you. I also think they do a nicer job than most pre-builts with their stock keycaps, though the designs have fans and (shall we say non-fans, lol). My wife is very fond of the K series I got her, but I think that’s going to be her one keeb for a long time.

Which switches did you get?

I had a hard time deciding between the K Pro red or the K Pro brown. I ultimately decided on the brown.

I think that’s another good choice. Mildly tactile, familiar but different from a membrane, and not so light that a heavy typist will trigger presses accidentally. Also a sweet spot to go in any direction should you decide you want something different.

Cool, I think I am gonna have lots of fun being part of this community. I really appreciate your insight. I welcome any and all sources of info. My plan for this keyboard is to align it with my desk setup theme.

Thank you for your kind words. Basically I am looking for keycaps that are close to Lego colors my desk setup has a semi Lego motif. But I am open to just cool keycaps. If anyone has any recommends on where would be best to find cool keycaps and possibly a cool knob, I’m open to suggestions.

At the low end, search Amazon for building block keycaps, or block keycaps, or (for some reason I don’t yet understand) doys keycaps. Quite a few with the look of Lego studs. Higher end, if you want to go with the classic “bucket o’ bricks” look and feel, Drop currently has the SA Handarbeit set on deep discount. They’re high quality ABS like Lego, and they’re in eye-searingly bright primary colors like the intro sets we all had. “SA” can be an adjustment if you don’t have fond memories of old IBM typewriters or 8-Bit computers, but I love it.

@wjrii Thank you. The Drop ones might be the way I’ll go. Those are close enough without going to actual studded block caps.

Base set for $49 is a steal! I’m debating if I should get the sculpted or flat R3. I don’t have any SA but have a bunch of MT3…

If it’s relevant to you, the numpad kit is sculpted only. I like both, but even apart from my tendency towards weird boards that really benefit from unsculpted kitting, I might just barely give the edge to unsculpted, but if you like MT3 a lot then sculpted may be the only way you’ll enjoy SA at all, as MT3 was pretty openly meant to be an improvement on the same idea.

That was helpful, thanks! I do like the sculpt on MT3 so I’m thinking sculpted SA may be the way to go. While searching for some photos of the side profiles, I stumbled on the original geekhack IC and hoo-boy that is a hot mess of angry opinions :flushed:

Renders were helpful though! Here’s the side profile comparison:

I love that it looks great even on a black board also.
