After years of chasing group buys and JP-domestic drops, I finally worked out a repeatable way to buy keyboards and keycaps directly from Japan, so I figured I’d write it up for anyone else who keeps hitting the “does not ship to your country” wall.
Why bother going straight to Japan?
A huge slice of the hobby’s most interesting stuff is Japan-only or just far cheaper on the domestic market:
- Topre boards — used HHKB (Professional HYBRID, Type-S) and Realforce (R3, GX1) show up constantly second-hand at prices you rarely see in the West.
- Artisan keycaps & small-batch sets — a lot of Japanese makers run group buys that only ship inside Japan.
- Shops like Yushakobo (遊舎工房) in Akihabara and TALP Keyboard — great catalogs, but checkout is often domestic-only or Japanese-address-only.
- Vintage boards — Topre/NEC/Fujitsu oddities that basically only surface on the Japanese used market.
The three real options
- Direct international shipping. A few shops do it, but selection is thin and single-item EMS to the US/EU gets expensive fast.
- A forwarding address (buy yourself, ship to a JP warehouse, reship). Works if the store takes a foreign card and you can read the checkout — the two things that usually break.
- A proxy/buying service. Someone in Japan buys on your behalf (including Mercari JP, Yahoo Auctions, Suruga-ya and domestic-only stores), consolidates, and forwards. This is what actually unlocks the used market and group buys.
Where the deals actually are
- Mercari Japan (mercari.jp) — the single best source for used HHKB/Realforce and pulled keycaps. Sellers are domestic-only, so you need a proxy or forwarder.
- Yahoo! Auctions Japan — vintage Topre and rare NIB boards, but bidding needs a Japanese account (proxy handles this).
- Suruga-ya — occasionally lists boards and switches cheap.
My workflow
- Find the listing (Mercari JP / Yahoo Auctions / a domestic shop).
- Hand the URL to a proxy service — I’ve been using OneMall because it handles Mercari + Yahoo Auctions + regular stores and consolidates everything into one box.
- They buy it, I pay item + domestic shipping + a service fee, then pick an international method.
- Consolidate multiple pickups so I’m paying one international shipment instead of five.

Shipping & customs, honestly
- EMS is the sweet spot for a single board (fast, tracked). Small parcel / surface is cheaper if you’re not in a hurry.
- A single keyboard is light, so international shipping usually isn’t brutal — consolidation is what saves the most money if you’re grabbing keycaps + a board together.
- Check your own country’s de minimis / import threshold; a used board over the limit can attract duty, so declare honestly.
That’s basically it. Nothing magic — the only real trick is getting a Japanese buying arm for the domestic-only listings. Happy to answer questions if anyone’s tried to import a specific board and got stuck.
