I did it for the same reasons, but that was back when they were still called Massdrop. And one of the reasons why I started to not enjoy the hobby as much anymore.
MiTo has always been a Drop shill. Remember the Laser clothing line they had for a hot minute?
Oh, yeah, I do vaguely recall that. They were going to have a whole line weren’t they?
I didn’t believe you at first but then I had to check, they actually had a GMK Laser clothing line.
I have some mixed feelings about this design choices:
They did the same with Godspeed. Drop + Alpha Industries Godspeed Flight Jacket | Mechanical Keyboards | Switch Tester
This was back when Drop had a “clothing” section, and they obviously wanted to use their popular IPs across their different community silos.
They sold 230 of those jackets. That’s… amazing. I’m not “it’s called fashion sweetie” enough to wear that.
Exactly what I was thinking. Sheesh.
you couldnt pay me to wear those
So Drop is doing a BOGO on MT3 sets and the pessimist in me is wondering if theyre doing that to distance themselves from the mt2 standing for mito fiasco
They run this regularly and they literally just finished up their GMK sale last night so it made sense not to overlap the sales. Doubt it has anything to do with the MT2 controversy.
Yeah, they’d announced that along with the MT2 announcement. The PR boondoggle developed after this announcement.
Ah my bad, i’m gonna blame lack of sleep on that
No worries, in the end none of this matters and Drop will keep being Drop.
I want more drama on this subject !
Well, Drop has been deleting posts from anyone who points out that Matt3o has rescinded permission to rerun his designs once they sell out, making Susuwatari, /dev/tty, and others limited editions now. They’re not denying it; they just don’t want anyone to know.
(AFAIK, they can still run the recolors they did without his blessing, like Dasher and Camillo.)
I’m interested to know too, would be a great time to pickup backups of Susuwatari and dev/tty.
But its hard to say, we dont know the specifics of the contracts and dont know who owns the colors. Perhaps he sold them the rights as he did with the MT3 profile?
Either way, they can certainly keep running the colors and at most they would have to remove his name (like clone keycaps). Yes, that would be incredibly scummy and would tank their reputation to the bottom of the barrel (if it already isnt there). But its not impossible as a worst case.
Yeah, hard to tell. Nothing they do would surprise me. I’m just going by the comments Matt3o has made on his blog - that he didn’t give them permission to restock anything that wasn’t already made, or just coming off the production line now-ish.
I did notice the /dev/tty base, Apple kit, and Unicorn Barf kits have run out over the past few days.
Ooh, Drop just renamed “MT2” to “DCX” (and DCP profile is now “DCD”).
Well that was unnecessarily painful.
Talk about hurting oneself in the confusion.
