"QMK: Only reference higher numbered layers"

In the QMK docs in Advanced Keycodes, it says that you should only reference higher numbered layers from a given layer.

If that’s the case and my base layer is [0], after having moved to FN Layer 1 using TG(1), how do I get back to base layer [0] (a lower numbered layer) if I should only reference higher numbers?

As far as I remember tg will toggle the layer on/off. So press once switches to the layer you set and press again switches back.
