"Touch ID" feature in mechanical keyboard available? I wish to replace an Apple keyboard

Hi

Is this true?

Bottom Line: If you want Touch ID functionality, you’d need to use an Apple device that already has it built in (Apple Silicon Mac with Touch ID keyboard, iPhone, or iPad). Third-party fingerprint readers exist but won’t give you the seamless integration and security features of genuine Touch ID.

Unfortunately, true. Jeff Geerling did something cool with creating a standalone Touch ID peripheral. Required gutting a Magic Keyboard though.

There was a project in the geekhack forum a year or two ago where someone was working on this, but it also required a sacrificial Magic Keyboard and it was, shall we say, involved.
