Iris SE came in today. Haven’t used a true split board in years and muscle memory is a little slow coming back.
Got my second Alu Board in today, Chiffre+ in green with second pair of plates and Geon Blacks. Always told myself that going for CNC boards is not worth it, then went to the last meetup and well, this is where we are now.
You are killing me with these unibody splits. Something about them speaks to me. The Endgame in particular is something I may need to build the more I see it. I’d probably end up tweaking the PCB design to use a Xiao nRF52840 or nice!nano to get Bluetooth and ZMK
For the Xiao you would need to get a shift register or something, not enough pins on there as I remember. A nRF board witth Zero footprint would really be great for that. I actually kind of like the aspect of not having to fiddle around with ZMK profiles, but thats on me since I switch between work and private laptop at the desk and private even sometimes between Linux and Windows. Remembering which profile was which client is getting a bit annoying after time, especially if I dont switch that often.
But sorry not sorry for the unibody fomo, you really need to get one.
Yeah, the shift registers are pretty easy to work with in ZMK. Wound up needing to use one for the Nice!Nano replacement board I designed for my KA2. Now, I just have a bunch of shift registers and sockets just sitting there asking to be used.
I typically have my ZMK boards connected over USB to whichever machine is plugged into my dock, but it’s really convenient if I want to switch to my personal laptop on the side by popping over to bluetooth priority mode and then back to USB priority when I’m done.
Got DCS Red Alert in today! Wish Laminar would’ve offered the child kits in this as well as Lam Alert, but happy to have this set since I missed out on the last run with Omnitype in 2020. Still would love to see a true re-run of DCS/OTD Rebel Alert though!
Lam alert here too! I do own the white and red as well from a few years back so I’ll take some comparison pics soon.
Also got both base sets of GMK nerve for my Gehrin boards.
Lastly, some HE Raeds. Feel nice but a bit light in hand. Feels like maybe 35g bottom out? Just guessing from experience. I’ll have to see once I get them in a board.
Just checked the spec sheet and they are listed as 45g switches. Pretty sure that’s 45g bottom out. Tested against a cherry red switch it was fully depressed while the cherry red was less than 1/2 way down. So yes, ultra light switches.
Wow. it might just be the pics but the base color for Lam Alert is nowhere as beigeish as I thought it would be! That would be awesome if you could throw up some comparison pics between Lam Alert & 2020 Red Alert when you get a chance.
Had some time today and got my HE Raeds into my wooting board.
Are they smooth? Yep.
Do they wobble? Not much.
Are they tactile? Slightly.
Any fitment issues? Nope.
Are they silent? Basically. Rebound of stabilized keys is most of what you hear.
I’m truly impressed. Not a single issue. They aren’t as light as I originally thought, either. I had them in hand and didn’t realize I was not pressing the edges from underneath, so the full dome was sliding down instead of collapsing. I don’t have much else to say. They are pretty much perfect.
10/10 recommend if you have a HE board and want something that feels more in line with a Topre switch.
I’m probably going to seek out some HE kits for another board after trying these.
The wonders of modern technology and ingenuity, thank you AEBoards
Fresh from South Korea:
I might try the Geon stems in MX housings. But I also have some MMD Vivian available. Would build them as light-tactiles, if possible, using the 50 G 18mm springs.
Might also try those 18mm springs in KTT Macaron Orange or Gateron Longjing Tea, as I think that the 22mm+ springs in those are too large.
Also received a cable from AliExpress that might be used in an NCR-80:
Geon’s 40g to 55g 18mm springs have been my go to for quite awhile now. They seem to strike the best balance between poppy upstrokes while not making the weighting feel too off from the stated value. Also Geon’s springs are easily the most consistent & quiet aftermarket springs out there IMHO. Let us know how you like them when you get a chance!
That set really works with your board!
I was going to comment how it looked like the board was lifted straight out of a comic, then went back to the other thread and looked at the name of the set… mission accomplished.
GMK Winkler. Can’t wait until tonight so I can put the mug to proper use!
I’m fairly certain there are no Winkler distributers in Tennessee, . I do have some Hofbräu in the beer fridge. Welp, I know what I’m doing tonight. Prost!
I got…an empty box.
(This was supposed to be a Gopolar Tai-chi from Kono.)
It arrived in a wrapper from the USPS basically saying, “ain’t us, we just got it this way somehow.” Then there’s additional wrinkle that it looks like it was intentionally cut open (vs. being dropped and splitting open).
Here’s hoping dealing with Route isn’t too much of a pain… And glad I got it now because otherwise I think my alternative would be the USPS insurance, which only would cover $100 of the $150 board.
That’s the big suck right there. Sorry, man. Hopefully Route hooks you up
No pictures, but I got the tenting kit from keeb.io for the Iris SE that I built as well as a cheap set of Womier XDA profile keycaps off Amazon. I will probably buy some DSA from SP later, but just needed something cheap for it that was uniform.
Got a bunch of stuff in from LowproKB including:
- LDSA thumb keys
- Choc Purpz
- More Ambient Twilights
- Choc Sunset tactiles
The Ambient Twilights I already know I love, I’m just stocking up before tariffs kick back in. The purpz will be going into another Totem build I have planned because I want to try the super light linear on a full board.
I did install the LDSA thumb keys and Sunset tactiles in my current main Totem.
I didn’t love the thumb keys at first, so I switched them back to standard DDC on the thumbs. Those immediately felt “wrong” in that location, and I put the LDSA thumb keys back on. Now I love them. Funny how that works. I highly recommend the LDSA thumb keys now, and I will be using them on all of my Totems.
Now, the Choc Sunset tactiles… I am decidedly NOT a tactile switch person. At all. The only tactiles I’ve ever really been into are Topre, and I do love me some Topre. I just figured I’d buy these before tariffs complicate procuring them. Well… I LOVE these switches. I’m still a linear person at heart, but these will never come out of this Totem, and I can easily see myself buying more of them. They are a medium tactile with a P shaped bump that starts right at the top. This doesn’t sound particularly special, but you really need to try them to “get it”. Simply explaining their characteristics doesn’t properly represent how great they feel on a board. I easily put this in my top 5 favorite switches, and my overall favorite tactile with Topre now as a distant second. I was not expecting these to be such an immediate “WOW!”, but I am pleasantly surprised. Plus, they have a gorgeous orange stem that I am a sucker for. So much of a sucker that this inspired me to purchase 80 MX oranges to throw into my Klor.
Choc Sunset are definitely my favourite modern “Orange.”
Really tempting me into getting a low-profile board.
