Hey everyone, Pop here. What is the better keyboard case color, black or white? Which is more compatible with keycap sets? Discuss!
Black of the two choices, but I will say that polycarb will match most keycaps.
IDK about better, but I do think black is more cosmopolitan in terms of “going with everything”. White goes with just about everything, too, but is a touch more “out there” if you’re not looking to make waves with a given look. In [ current year ] no one would bat an eye to see an all-black keyboard on someone’s desk, but an all-white one might catch a little more notice - especially now that Apple’s stock keebs aren’t that color anymore.
It’s also easier to have an apparent match between two different black plastics vs two different white plastics; tiny differences in pigmentation stand out a lot more in white - I can’t tell you how many white keysets I went through before giving up trying to match one of my white cases. It’s totally possible but the more picky your are about matching, the deeper in the weeds you’ll be with this pursuit… and lord help you if you’re a tetrachromat and picky.
Black is safest bet when it comes to case. No need to fuss when case gets dirty. Minor dents are less visible and can be hidden with Sharpie.
I belong to the light side. Gib white cases and white keycaps plz.
If I think I can pick it up without leaving finger prints, then black. If not, white for sure.
Pretty much everything goes with white except a different shade of white (e.g. beige on bright white doesn’t look great). Wouldn’t say the same with black (e.g. IMO beige, brown, or brown-ish sets go poorly with black - something like GMK Bingsu or Chocolatier does not go well with a black case).
Gray and silver are other neutral colors that are fairly versatile.
Nautilus works on black but not white.
I think I’m on team white to be honest… I simp Navy and works best with white.
see, this is why I usually get gray. Split the difference.
Honestly, frosted Polycarbonate tends to be the winner for best with any keycap set.
I think I would like a N9 colored case
I was thinking the other day that GMK should sell some cases in a few of their popular colors. I’d love a case that matches Nines or Minimal exactly.
Personally I got a big soft spot for e-white so I’d lean more towards white for myself. Although I do have to say they are both pretty safe colors that go with just about any key set, as black & white are both neutral enough IMO to not clash with other colors. That said I will admit black is the more neutral of the two. Because I’ve put some sets on my white boards & felt it just didn’t look right. While I can’t ever recall having that thought with any set I’ve ever put on a black board.
Edit: I forgot to mention PC boards which are hands the most neutral, can’t really clash with translucent. So I agree with everyone saying PC is probably the most match anything case material/color. I guess we should also throw clear & frosted acrylic on that list too if we’re gonna talk up PC for matching any colors.
Black as midnight on a moonless night, as they say. Not because thats how I like my coffee (it is how I like my coffee though) but rather because I can’t own anything white without it getting hand-grime on it.
I feel like that has to do with contrast, maybe. I’ve noticed it mostly with yellows and pinks on keycaps looking brighter/richer or having more “pop” on a black case and the same keycaps looking kind of washed out or almost pastel when paired with a white case.
Between these two I’d pick white.
However I’m more of a beige/oyster white/model m white kind of guy. Goes really well with 9009.
