Who else likes thumb keys? And who likes split space bars on an otherwise conventional keyboard?

Hi all,

I fell into the mechanical keyboard rabbit hole from a very unusual direction. In my reckless youth I thought it was a good idea to repurpose the right Alt key (ISO AltGr) as a thumb key to type the letter E. Then I got really used to that and used this on many different cheap, non-mechanical keyboards, even laptops. Ten years later I got my first mechanical keyboard because I wanted a split with nicer thumb keys. And now I am typing on that split, it’s going great with my right thumb permanently resting on the letter E, always read to press down.

I know from seeing split ergo keycap pictures that other popular uses of thumb keys are Backspace, Shift, Ctrl or layer switches to use home-row navigation. (I also have that, it’s great!)

Now, the only sad thing is that I feel apprehension towards using laptop keyboards now. But I also sometimes like writing my diary in bed, some messages on the couch, or do some work on the train. So I went looking for a more compact, conventional looking keyboard that has at least two thumb keys… and it should be low-profile, because that’s the only thing my wrists tolerate.

Anyway, my post title was a question, so what’s your relationship to thumb keys?

My mostly normal keyboard with a split spacebar. (space on right, backspace on left, which comes in handy when I want to command-delete things)

OK so I guess it’s not that normal but it doesn’t feel like that much of a departure from a standard layout. Ortho didn’t take me too long to adapt to.

I think this is everything with a weird space bar area. Some were just to avoid stabs and are literally just a split spacebar. Others do layer switch or hold-tap with mods. That split keeb remains my least used DIY board. I made some leaps in layout and construction that I wasn’t ready for; it’s a poor design and poor build, but darned if the thing isn’t bulletproof.
