Totally agree. While I do enjoy using Reddit, it is kind of an anti-forum in a lot of ways. You generally donāt notice who is posting something, so itās difficult to get a sense of who individual people are, and posts essentially disappear after a fews hours, so itās very difficult to follow up on things or have a discussion. Facebook is the same way, and it really annoys me that so much of the ācommunityā around my other hobbies like 3D printing and toy collecting have moved there.
I completely agree with you both, Reddit isnāt really setup to foster a community. I was being a bit harsh calling it a dickswinging contest, but because of the format that is what it feels like to me sometimes. 99% of the interesting posts & genuinely good questions get pushed way down off the front page of r/mk in lieu of memes & cool pics. Just not my scene I guess. ĀÆ_(ć)_/ĀÆ
Definitely that too, I never been on the r/mk Discord but will 100% agree r/mk itself was better when Ripster was guiding the ship. I know he had his issues with GH, but dude did a lot of good for the community from what I can gather. Although I was just getting into the hobby as he was disappearing from it so I wasnāt around for any of whatever went down there. I wonder what happened to him?
R/MK is its own thing, a rebellion against the status quo, a giant fuck you from an iconoclast who was banned (for fairly good reasons, go check it out if you ever get bored, which I have).
It stands as a last will and testament from a dude who would probably get shadow banned by the mods it has now, if anyone cared, which they probably would if the Ripster were in his prime, which heās not.
Dumb memes and nuggets galore, it is the introduction to our hobby, the easiest and best place to direct the casual inquirer. I started there, I donāt apologize for anything. Iāve learned that people are important and they are interesting, downvotes donāt mean a goddamn thing, and your voice makes a difference, the cumulative opinion changes the practical reality.
Shit bombs, even stupider shit makes R/All. Every bit makes our hobby better. We die without new blood.
Iāll just add that I very much respect the opinions of those with whom I disagree, we are all on the path, and Iām cool with divergences in the woods.
Peace, my brothers and sisters, robots and cyborgs.
Yes, on the other side of things, I wouldnāt even be in the hobby if it wasnāt for some of the keyboard photos I saw on Reddit that planted the seeds for me
Ah man, I missed the birthday while I was on vacation! Iāve only really started being active here recently but I really like the community. I sometimes feel like thereās a lot of useful info that gets splintered across different threads (using the Discourse wiki feature might help with that?) but overall I think itās a great platform for discussion
As for reddit⦠Itās definitely a different format that isnāt conducive to long-form discussions like Discourse or traditional forums. Any single conversation dies out after a few days max, the voting system promotes photography/memes over actual info, etc. The wiki helps but ever since Ripster went from being insanely active to complete radio silence it went downhill fast. I still try to help people in the daily stickies from time to time and I enjoy seeing peoplesā pictures, but I just like the format here more for in-depth discussions.
Anyway, I donāt want to keep ranting about Reddit when we should be celebrating a great year of Keebtalk Iām glad I found a new keyboard home and I canāt wait to see how this community continues to grow over the years to come. Cheers yāall!
We owe a great deal to reddit but it can only take us so far, you know? RMK isnt perfect, but itās still where a majority of people, including myself, came into the hobby. My comment about Ripster wasnāt regarding anything the man did - itās simply an indication of how damn OLD the (new reddit inaccessible, yeesh) subreddit wiki is.
Last thing about reddit from me I promise, but you are very correct about this. While it might not be the place to get deeper into the community it does serve as a great exposure tool. Even though I moved away from it fairly fast Iād be lying if I said I got my start in the hobby elsewhere too, so +1 for the very logical point here sir!
Yeah, my bad for derailing the thread. Wasnāt the intention, no more about reddit from me here.
Lol, not a problem man itās only natural to bring up a comparison when talking about how awesome this site is. Canāt be the best if thereās no competition!
Very true!
Congrats to Keebtalk for a great first year! The lack of salt here is refreshing. Yāall are the best. <3
Best place, from the people who run it, to the people who frequent it, so much love!
LOL. This one thing that Reddit does, is why I keep posting there, especially when Iām four beers deep. No matter what, good or bad, stupid or perceptive, itāll be gone three days after I post the comment. With Keebtalk, I need to consider the ramifications of my ramble.
This is the New York Times of forums, the historical record for reference. R/MK is the World Weekly News full of Bigfoot Nazi Elvis sightings, a fish wrapper.
GH for the heads up on ICs and GBs, Deskthority for the grognards, R/MK for blowing off steam and desk porn, KT for the happy medium. Iām only subscribed to two of these Iāve listed, you can guess which ones.
Itās all good, so long as weāre fighting the āmanā and donāt turn on ourselves. Better input devices for all!
I still think weāre overdue for the ritual Banning Of The Ripster, the yearly event where the legend gets tarred and feathered, kicked out summarily from subscrbership, but one week later, we all āregret itā and bring his cynical, obnoxious bastard self back into our fold (whether he wants it or not). I still think this would make the corn grow green and tall, the cattle lactate, chickens produce jumbo-sized eggs, and our children shoot death lasers from their sightless eyes against our common enemies, the Krull.
Iām not sure where this is going. But Iām all for it; whatever it is.
I havenāt been here that long, but I find it much more enjoyable than some of the other alternatives in the community. A huge thanks to those who keep this place running and thanks to the rest of you for making a relatively new guy feel welcome. To many more years!
Read this on the back of a strangerās head while riding my pet unicorn to the above ground underwater Santaās sleigh transit system to get to my job as an oxygen massager. It made me feel like a slab of wet marble.
I think this related to where you were going.
ANOTHER YEAR! woop woop
I have learned more here than anywhere else in keyboards.
Same! Came for one question, stayed for the vibes. (but also more knowledge) Still my favorite website 5 years later.
Wait, itās been another year already?!?!?
I concur with all the above quotes! Especially Hueyās! Like seriously, time be flying nowadays⦠Guess weāre getting old guys.
Damn. I still vividly remember jumping from another forum to this forum while on my honeymoon in Aruba six years ago.
That was also the last vacation Iāve been on. I think weāre due for another trip before Keebtalk turns 10.
