Interesting Finds & Heads-Ups

Extras seems to highly depend on the demand for the set AND the number of extras purchased by vendors. Some sets seem to sell out instantly while others I’m still seeing vendors trying to unload months later.

There’s also the variable that some vendors (NK I think does this, maybe others?) where once the GB phase closes and they place the order (including the extras), they start selling pre-orders for the extras.

One other thing to consider with GB’s is that there’s a bit more risk involved, as failure to meet MOQ results in cancellation. Eventually, you get your money back, of course, but you have to wait til the cancellation for that. This has become more of a thing recently as the keeb market contracts (and the economy sours), with a number of recent GB’s failing to hit MOQ.

I was surprised by it coming in MTNU, too, and joined on the spot when I saw it! I do not need ANY more Cherry/DCS/CYL unless it’s an absolutely stunning colorway which I don’t have anything like. But more MTNU in a good colorway is always welcome.

(I skipped on Mictlan and am skipping on Divina Papaya because after a certain number of colors, my brain rejects it as color cacophony (“unicorn vomit”) unless there’s some kind of pattern/ordering, like rainbow order or complementary colors. Otherwise, I’ve pretty much gotten every MTNU set that’s come out since I started paying attention.)

This looks fun:

Includes a solenoid!

Looks like a straight PCB, right (there’s no pics)? Looks like this is coming from PlayKeyboards, good to see they’ve not given up on capturing the old IBM aesthetic. Little unsure about the software on it, it looks like one of these Tri-Mode PCBs. Usually they have a “hacked” version of QMK that supports wireless but there’s no indication of that here.

Surely the PCB is the same one they used in the Model OLED and it’s curved. $79 for base kit, I’m in for beige. I have the model OLED in gray. Love it.

This is pretty much a rework of the model OLED in ABS to make it more affordable. I think they hit the mark!

I have to say, the curve is very subtle. I had plans to use R3 SA caps with the first one, but it still feels like uniform R3 to me. I did like the way it enhanced the sculpt on cherry profile though.

Hopefully you don’t mind a little flattery but I do love how you have so many amazing boards and are in no way above getting a cool board that has been made in ABS to lower the price.

The PCB is in segments, attached by ribbon cables, and screwed into the plate. There are a few YouTube reviews that have done full breakdowns. Also, the designer confirmed on their Reddit IC thread that it’s configurable in VIA, but only with the JSON definitions. So yeah, it’s a multilayer firmware (like NEO tri-mode PCBs for instance) with a proprietary comm layer on top of QMK. I think I’m going to pick up a 7u barebones kit.

Do you mind elaborating just a bit on the distinction you made about “configurable with VIA, but only with the JSON definitions”? Does that rule out certain VIA / QMK functionality? Or affect what sort of connection type you need to use to get it to connect to VIA?

Well ABS is far superior in the winter for me. No risk of shock. Plus, it almost ALWAYS sounds better

Also, I love beige, and I vastly prefer the feel of ABS over e-coated aluminum.

This is the gist of it. Fully functional in VIA, but the VIA team has not added this file to their codebase/database. Once you load the file, you’re good to go. This is similar to most boards coming out these days I would imagine as VIA is technically closed source project, and they have to have a reason to add your board (friend of the team, payment, some other collaboration).

In order to add a board to VIAs official list, they require the source to be merged in the QMK’s master branch. Which is why tri mode boards almost always require side loading a json as QMK doesn’t support wireless stuffs.

Got it! Thanks @fatalruin and @huhsh !

and has a spin time - I wonder if this is some sort of fidget spinner

Maybe so. Also dimensions and weight are that of a single keycap

And I just noticed only 100 units. All the past releases have been 250

Yep it’s a fidget spinner. Bummer

An Australian company sells injection moulded C64-to-MX adapters and, according to the creator of the MechBoard 64, “The result is a much better fit compared to any 3D printed adapters I have tried.”

They also make MechBoard 64 kits (a modernized MX-compatible Commodore 64 computer), but they’re sold out.

I should have started my own topic so that I’m not posting about C64 stuff all over the place….

DCS UFO has a full kit with a numpad kit! But yeah After School and Sumo are pretty fun…

Thought I’d share what I noticed today. Anyone tried to look for a USB 60% hotswap board lately? Surprisingly hard to find. Most are out of stock and look to be discontinued.

The market has changed so much. Most bargain cases come with their own pcb.

I happened to remember that NK was clearing out their WT-60s

If you think you might need a hotswap 60% with USB down the road, you may want to pick one up
