Interesting Finds & Heads-Ups

Hey, I just talked with the mod on their discord and the Day Off 60 does NOT support Tsangan bottom row. Just FYI. It was supported in the IC but they dropped it for production and forgot to change the info in the discord channel.

Chonky trash mods aren’t my favorite, but they work okay on this…

Icon mods :face_vomiting:

Other than being SP, this set had nothing nice going on about it. Colorway is mid and legend font is blehhhh

I think with the lower case DSA alphas, which are thicker, the trash mods look less jarring. With the standard alpha font, the trash icons look ridiculously thick. Same for DCS, the mods look comically thick.

Maybe this deserves to be in the “things that make you go hmm…” thread.

We have mostly included sets that are in circulation and NOT “dead” inventory from years prior.

wait… so we are supposed to get excited about getting a randomly chosen keycap set that we could just go online and purchase right now? What kinda fuckery is this?

And this one…

“You can expect premium kits from MT3, GMK, SA, XDA, DCS, Skylight, Artifact, and others.”

YOU COULD WIN A PORSCHE, A FERRARI, A FORD TAURUS, AND OTHERS! :man_facepalming:

You know what that could have done AND it would have made more sense AND more people would do it? Have these as special gift boxes that you could win for free with any purchase over $130. Boom.
Huge participation. Overall higher profits.

Drop, just hire new people. It’s not that hard.

Don’t get me wrong. I know these will sell. A few people will get nice stuff. But at the end of the day, it’s another example of Drop winning at the expense of the community. Don’t know why I’m ranting. Business gonna do business things. Maybe I’ve got my monthly male cycle starting today.

I have a feeling this is going to be like the NK_ mystery switch sale, loads of unpopular products (Kailh BOX) with enough popular ones (Creams, Inks) to keep people buying.

The sad thing is the amount of people who don’t have the money who will take the gamble and get turds in a box. It makes me sad to think of someone saving up to buy this only to be disappointed. Such is the world of gambling.

That Hipyo fellow did a video where he bought some “Mystery Boxes” from a vendor who had previously given one to him. In the one he received he got a keyboard which he was suspicious of. So he spent another $200 to get several boxes mystery shopper style.

All the boxes just had absolute garbage in them. Nothing of any significant value and certainly nothing interesting.

I think Mystery boxes are just a cynical way these companies are making a buck off an already expensive hobby.

Ah yes, mystery boxes. The easiest way to sell unwanted products to gullible buyers.

It’s the same thing as gambling, but to be honest I’d rather use that money in an actual casino, where I could make profit. I could lose it, but that would still be better than getting stuck with a mediocre keycap set which I’d never use.

From a seller standpoint I totally get mystery boxes, but as a buyer I consider them unprofessional.

I’d go a step further and say that all of these mystery boxes and grab-bags popping up from various vendors are inspired by that sale. They saw how well it did, how much business it brought in, and how generally well-received it was.

I think there are some critical differences between what NK_ did and what Drop is doing - or what Idobao did, for that matter.

With NK_, they spelled-out what you were getting into and why they were doing it. They had a bunch of old inventory they wanted to clear-out, so they decided to move it mystery-grab-bag style. You knew how many switches you were getting and had a good idea of what the possible pool was. The price was good for any of them, great for some - even if you got the “worst” switches, you still got a discount on them. Personally I bought a ridiculous number of those mystery bags just looking to expand my collection at a bro-rate, so I was happy every time; from my perspective there was no gambling with value - just a mystery about what I might end up with.

With Idobao, the terms are a lot less explicit, the range of what you might get is a lot more wide (ie not limited to switches and the quantity is not specified). It’s not totally clear, but it’s at least a reasonably likelihood that a lot of this stuff is less-desirable inventory they want to get rid of. It really is a mystery box - and critically, you stand a good chance of overpaying for lame stuff. Hipyo pretty thoroughly illustrated that in his video. (As an aside, I think it’s been fun watching his channel evolve from where it started.)

With Drop it’s kind of in-between; you do know what kind of item you’re getting (keycaps), and you at least have a good idea of how many you’re getting (most likely at least a TKL kit) - however - @pixelpusher makes the salient point that these could be anything from premium to party-favor quality. Like with the Idobao box, you might over pay for garbage caps that make your hands clammy and have banana space bars.

So far, every copy-cat mystery box has had an element of shadiness to it that I’m not fond of, but I’ll stay on this little limb and say NK_'s version of this was alright because the boundaries of the mystery were clear, and the value was there. I had fun with it because I like a good mystery and collect switches - but I only played the “game” because I knew the “worst” outcomes were still desirable for my goals.

Having everything spelled-out made it easy for me to decide if it was worth it even if I didn’t know exactly what I was getting - I can’t say the same for any of the other mystery packs I’ve seen so far.

I liked the way NK_ did it and I kinda hope they do it again - but I don’t like that it’s inspired a mystery grab-bag fad almost totally devoid of the scruples, value, and reasonability baked-into their own.

Edit: to Dorp’s credit, it looks like boxes with lower-value keycaps will likely have at least more of those lower value keycaps inside:

The MSRP of the contents within each box is over $200 (many much more).

So, if you get a $40 Artifact set, it will likely have other stuff in the box with it to get to that MSRP.

I’m guessing they think that tossing an artisan in with the Artifact Bloom sets makes the box the value equivalent of a set of SA alphas and mods, and absolves them of any complaints about unfairness. Which is… um, no.

yea, ill admit i still got a bunch of the mystery switches just cause i like having some stock of switches (even if theyre not great) incase i need to use them. But I only got them when I ordered something else from NK. I never ordered them on their own

wow, they sold out in less than 8 minutes? I went there at 1:08 and it says sold out :frowning:
