Interesting Finds & Heads-Ups

Dorp’s product descriptions are exemplary context-clues fluff.

Like, they’re well-written from an English grammar standpoint - but terrible from an accuracy or clarity standpoint. I think they have one person writing all of those for the whole site and it sometimes shows they aren’t exactly familiar with a given product or what its about. :stuck_out_tongue:

But that description makes it sound like typing on them is going to induce a heroin trip or something. It’s a bit over the top LOL.

Oh hey! Looks like the Ducky Secret and Secret M mouses aren’t out of production, after all - MechanicalKeyboards dot com finally re-stocked them:

If you aren’t familiar, it’s a pretty standard “gaming” mouse, except the shell is made of PBT. It’s not ambidextrous, but at least for my right-handedness, I find the shape very comfortable. If you like Ducky but find the Feather too light / small / gamer-aesthetic for you, the Secret line might be worth a look - unlike many popular gaming mice on the market right now, this one makes no attempts to be light, and that’s something I like about it.

Here’s a bundle that includes their Flipper deskmat; it’s a standard black one with red stitching and the Ducky logo - nothing too special about it but it’s pretty thick and durable:

The “Secret M” is the smaller version with the “Secret” being full-sized; that said, I would not call the M a small mouse by any means - more like the “normal” one is a big mouse. Here’s a link to that one, which also includes the Flipper mat:

I’ve been using one of these for about three years now, and I like it quite a bit. At one point maybe a year ago, one of the main microswitches (Omron in this case) started to go - popping the case open and soldering-in a couple Kailh replacement switches was easy-peasy.

3D Printed Hall effect Mag Lev MX switches… Hmm…

Whoa. So they actuate using magnets? I wonder how they feel. I’d image you’d sense the magnets negative attraction and resistance near the bottom out. Sort of like progressive and complex springs I wager.

Have you ever seen Riskable’s work? They designed a fully printable keyboard (cept for hall sensor pcb) with varying tactility with different amount of magnets.

I’ve encountered his work once, great stuff.
Still hoping for his stabilizers idea to come alive at some point.

It kinda sounds like it uses magnets both in place of springs and contacts. You’d definitely feel the levitation magnets, but the ones used for sensing won’t have any feel to them.

Edit; clever deign:

The sensor has magnetic bits inside that will sense when the top magnet gets close; what’s extra clever here is that same magnet is also used for levitating the stem. This is really cool…

Thomas / Chyrosran22 has some great videos about Hall Effect switches and keebs - though all of those do use more or less traditional springs for return force.

Nothing earth shattering but this is an interesting design departure for a stock Durock switch. It has the clasp-style housing, dust-resistant stem, and a long spring. I’ll admit that I’m intrigued, if for nothing else than the color.

Nice.

Looks like they have upgraded the quality of their pads a bit too. The previous solder DZ60 felt so incredibly cheap and solder did not adhere to the pads as easily as it should have.

Seems so pointless with the Tofu case. Can you remove the posts on it?

That’s totally what I’m hoping and thinking too. Like a sign of the paradigm shift to come.

I mean, the wooden Tofu already does it.

Hmmmm this is particularly interesting. I feel like I could definitely make these with my 3d printer without issue, I just don’t know what I’d do after that lol

Have washable keyboard. LOL

I think you could take a Dremel to it and cut off the posts, but probably would be better to have it removed entirely.

You definitely can. I cut the posts off of my 5 degree case a few years back. Dremel cuts aluminum pretty easily.

Been waiting on this guy to run again for a little while. There are things about all of these colorways that I like, but the “THIS IS PLASTIC” version really tickles my fancy:

Something about all that superfluous labeling combined with how this thing leans-into and owns being made of plastic. Makes me think of the iPhone 5c commercials; “…unabashedly plastic.”

I know those were the biggest flop of any iPhone model since the outset, but at least physically, they remain one of my favorites precisely because they were plastic - nice plastic. It was a modern device that managed not to feel physically-precious while also not feeling cheap - that’s a fine line to walk that rarely works out - but for my tastes, Apple nailed it that time - and at least aesthetically, I think MelGeek nailed it this time, too.

If superfluous labeling and light seafoam aren’t your thing, there are also three other colorways inspired by but not completely copying some existing ones:

  • “Neon” ( Laser )

  • “Retro” ( Dolch )

  • “Pigeon” ( Pono )

Those versions are also a bit less expensive, presumably due to less silk-screening work and such.

They are clearly inspired by existing colorways, but not exact copies - and they do look quite nice in MelGeek’s Cherry-like ABS caps, paired with the given case colors.

Deffo not the best deal out there when it comes to a plastic gasket keeb - but hey it’s quirky! Once I’m all set-up in my new place, I’ll be producing lots of content including overviews of and comparisons between lots of the “entry level” and/or plastic boards that are nice to type on - so if you’re on the fence about this one, I think they’ll probably run it again.

I ordered a “Plastic” for many of the same reasons. I actually have the full set of keycaps I purchased a while back, but was excited to see the keyboard they were pictured on. So I naturally had to treat myself. Had to.
