Weird flex with a STEEL PLATE and no center post. Granted, he is pushing harder than you would type, but the flex cuts on the PCB are a contributing factor to center flex. With the fr4 plate on the Salvation, this would be amplified (or you can snap off the center portion of the plate if you want to hit the bottom of the case with the PCB while typing). I think there will be a good amount of flex before the effects of the leaf springs on the Salvation, but they will provide flex around the edges too.
My question is: would it flex the same with a normal PCB without weirdflex ?
Leandren must’ve really been pushing down super hard if that is a steel full plate under there. Even if it’s a thin boi steel plate. My experience with a weirdflex PCB on a full plate (a POM full plate to boot) was the flexcuts did very little if anything to affect a normal typing experience. That is what actually drove me to cut the plate into a half plate. So I’d take this video with a huge grain of salt. Sure with a weird flex PCB any plate will show more flex when being pushed on heavily, but this does not translate over to normal typing. If anything, a full plate & weirdflex PCB will feel a tiny bit bouncier than with a PCB without similar flexcuts. Nothing transformative like when one is used with a half plate or plateless though IME.
He was thumbing it pretty hard yes, lol. I do see your point where a half plate / plaitless build would be far more flexy. I just got a weirdflex in along with POM full plates and fr4 half-plates – some experimentation is in order it seems.
was seriously considering this… but decided to go with a the KBD67 Lite R2 instead.
Maybe there’ll be a poly/ABS leaf-spring in future…
Wilba commented the other day on his discord to a couple of people asking about using weirdflex plateless. He said he uses Salvation with a full plate, then mentioned he’s more likely to try a brass plate than he would be to use it plateless. His money quote: “if you get hotswap for salvation, you can try plateless, then go wilba was right and build it again with the plate.” pic related.
fwiw, it looks like he’s talking about weirdflex in Salvation, not in other builds.
I was more talking about using a weirdflex PCB with a hard mount like top, bottom, sandwich, or tray mount. In the Salvation the flex comes directly from the mounting itself & it has mounting points in the middle of the PCB. So using a weirdflex PCB plateless in it probably will feel very similar to a plated build.
No disrespect! I was enjoying the thread and remembered reading this exchange. Just figured I would post because it seemed relevant to the discussion. Also, I thought that was your intent which is why I included the note about the comments appearing to be Salvation-specific. Thanks for clarification.
None taken bud, just wanted to clarify as I figured that was what you were thinking!
Maybe Wilba could weight in but it looks like the only mounting points on the Salvation (2 of them) are towards the edges (well, the second ones in from the edge) and only soft rubber supports on spring leaves elsewhere. His last discord comment seems to indicate that he believes that the weirdflex makes a difference in the Salvation with the provided plate (as apposed to a regular pcb). Ultimately we will get to experiment when the board ships and see for ourselves. Regardless, I’m excited for this board and can’t wait to see everyone’s builds!
You know what I think you might be right about that. Or at the least you can set the Salvation up like that. Hopefully Wilba does divulge some more info here. Although I’m in the same boat, already ordered mine & am excitedly playing the waiting game for it now!
I’m hearing a low-pitched thump after each keystroke that reminds me of blood pulsing around the temple during severe headache. This case is definitely not for me.
FYI, I did not hear that thump in this video.
Apiary finally making the Salvation look like a promising offering imo. Haven’t been interested until now.
Wish we could get that sweet color tho
So far have not seen any streamers doing a salvation build with brass plate or other plate materials. The FR4 plate build seems a little too clacky for me in most of the build seen so far (probably need a deeper sounding switch).
Still thinking to go Black, Grey or Silver…tough one
Wouldn’t a more rigid material like brass give you more clack?
Polycarb might be more attractive for more thocc, no?
What/which arguments convinced you?
That’s probably due to the board only coming with an FR4 plate, I’d imagine. At least you will be able to build it with any standard 60% plate when you get it into your hands, and you didn’t really have pay much for the plate that is included. Personally, I’m going to restrict my plate materials to FR4, Polycarbonate, and POM to get the most out of the Weirdflex PCB.
Yeah I know the base kit comes with FR4 just curious how it sounds or feels like with Alu or Brass but I guess that is for me to find out by getting plates from like easy sources like kbdfans or aliexpress…
Just the first time the keyboard has sounded decent to me.
