I cannot explain how pumped I am for this board to get delivered. It’s basically what got me into this community…safe to say it has been a slippery slope from there.

Waiting for a Shinobi DIY kit, too.

But actually I’d rather still want a Tex Kodachi. Unfortunately Candykeys never seem to have gotten any despite they still have it in their shop with “ETA: 2018-10-10”. *sigh*

@Justin: Any chance that the Kodachi gets a round 2? Maybe even as DIY kit? I’d really prefer an aluminium case over a plastic case. And I dislike these sub-1u keys of the Shinobi. I like the Tex ADA profile, but I still want to have the freedom to put other key caps sets on my keyboards.

I two would be down for a metal case, even it it is just a replacement case for the Shinobi.

I agree, that they sub 1u keys make it a pain, to play around with aftermarket key cap sets, but I love the way it looks.

It would be awesome to have the a custom set of cherry key caps, that would fit the sub 1u keys or a set of key caps, that more so resemble the keys on the SK-8855, to further pay homage to the inspired design.

Exactly.

As much I love the ADA profile on other keyboards, the SK-8855 (have three of them) had more like a very flat Cherry profile and I would have put probably a GMK key cap set on it.

If you have a GMK set, your should throw it on there and see how it looks, next to the sub 1u ada key caps and if they are the correct height, that would allow for use of the trackpoint, post ghb modification.

I had a look at the file the Shinobi web configurator generates, and it looks like a pretty dead easy format to mimic, if one was so inclined. It looks like just a binary grid of characters, one for each character, with the character it is mapped to, probably with some flags for CTRL, ALT or whatever. If one was so inclined, I reckon you could figure it all out in a couple of hours. Still, I don’t know why they don’t release their source code to make it a bit easier.

I wonder, if it’s not programmed in house and they have a contractual reason, for not sharing it…

CosmicKira: Nah, I don’t think so. My best guess is they don’t want the customer support issues of people generating their own. Who knows, maybe you could brick it with a bad file.

it’d be a good episode of this week in keyboards?

The legends wear kinda fast?

TIL: There is a BLE kit for the Shinobi

Edit:

Also a very reasonably priced DIY kit too (this is tempting me):

I’ve made a couple of videos on the build procedure and the BLE kit if anyone is interested:
