I got mine as well, placed them in Outemu Ice housings that I previously had. They make a world of a difference!
@ddrfraser1 how do you guys justify buying from drop given the recent controversy and the string of previous slights against the community? isn’t engaging with their platform simply giving them the go-ahead that the community is ok with getting screwed and lied to? not trying to call you guys out, just interested in some regulars opinions on drop.
Drop has always done stuff like that, but sometimes they’re the only one to get stuff from. How do people justify buying JWK switches? That’s probably worse IMO, but they have what people want. What’s the deal with the holy pandas and drop? I haven’t really been following…
They said that HPs were POM now, but turns out they are just Nylon, and it was a “typo” / “miscommunication” Then at one point in the thread, they confirmed refunds, but were going on about wanting to see proof of destructions and advised a customer to burn the switches on video. Then later said it was a joke. They have some seriously poor attitudes towards customers, not sure I understand their customer service strategy.
@Dr.Doof I don’t like supporting Drop, and don’t most of the time. But they are the only ones that have MT3 so if I want it, I have to get it from them. Same goes for GMK WoB, a classic set. I would also argue that while Drop does some boneheaded things, they are not all bad, and have done some nice things for the community as well. Like making MT3, making affordable entry level products that help get new people into the hobby, and pumping out lower end keycaps that are in stock. I think they have good intentions that get skewed by top brass looking for the $$$. Like all companies that start growing fast, they are experiencing growing pains. With any luck they were learn from these mistakes and be better for it. If they keep repeating them, eventually, we will all just be done with them I have a feeling. Also, why the heck did they buy Geekhack?
People have been using the small company grow fast description of drop for like years now, like at this point like they should have their shit together more IMO. The bits about destruction sound like poor customer service, but at the end of the day why does it really matter what plastic they’re made from? Can’t people just listen to how they sound and the decide if they like them?
To be frank, I’m just looking for the products I want. I hear rumors here and there of them being little shitheads but most of the time I don’t pay attention to it but maybe I should. Hey, we all buy from Apple and Amazon even though they are dickheads right?
Interesting, I concede that if they’re the only ones selling something and you want that something, you have to buy it from drop, and I do appreciate their continual release of some epic MT3 colorways, but I agree with @dwarflemur’s comment that they have existed for quite a while and they can’t really make the “move fast and break things” excuse anymore. To dwarf’s other point though, nobody is saying that the latest round of holy pandas are crap that no one should use, they may very well have created an interesting blend of materials that results in an entirely new sound profile. However people bought them as POM and I think expecting people to judge the switch based on its own merit when they expected the sound profile of POM is exceeding some peoples allowance for mistakes.
EDIT: spelling and grammer
I will add that I have seen many reports on both Reddit and Discord, that the HPs being received from this drop are more scratchy, and do not sound as nice. And they are coming factory lubed, despite being sold as unlubed switches. Many are yeeting them on out the door or getting refunds. I am guessing that since this is several runs deep of the same switch that the molds are getting worn out.
IME the Invyr/Drop Holy Pandas have been pretty shoddy with all runs. I got a bunch from the first run. They were not particularly smooth, had terrible springs, the leaves pinged a bit, & worst of all the top housing were very brittle. In every build I put them in I had at least 2 or 3 switches have the legs break off the top housing when removing keycaps. So it’s not like they were all that much better with fresh molds. Although I do agree the current molds are just gonna keep getting worse with switch quality following right behind it.
Got a cable from summitcables today!
btw I didnt know usps delivers at early as fuck o’ clock but hey cant complain too much haha
B stock from summit cables + an aviator connector to fix this oddity.
Thought it would look good with GMK Ursa. My wife says she like the pink and green. I guess it depends on how it looks with the keyset.
Got a super clean Wang Mec-101S in today! Nothing super special about the board, the switches are some type of ALPS SKCM clone (linears) & the build is a little flimsy. Although it is ultra clean (basically NOS) & has some decent ALPS doubleshot caps. Everything works with a Soarer’s convertor to, so for the $70 it cost me I feel like I got my money’s worth & finally was able to add a Wang board to my vintage collection! ![]()
So the mystery deepens a bit, this KB is actually a NTC KB-6252EA ver.5 which is supposed have blue or white ALPS but this one has Hua-Jie AK-DN2 Green linears which is apparently a rare switch according to DT. I opened it up & these are definitely the original switches so not sure what to make of the model numbering. Since DT says the model known for the Hua-Jie AK-DN2 greens is KB-6725EA.
Sweet Wang, dude! Er, um… cough.
How in the world did you find one so clean? Every Wang keyboard I’ve come across looks post-post-apocolyptic.
Yeah gotta love their name hahaha! Just good luck really, I pretty much thought the same thing when I seen it. There wasn’t any info on where it came from in the sales post & even less info about these boards on the web unfortunately. So not sure how this one managed to stay in such great shape?
Wow this pic is garbage, lol. I finally caved and bought one of my holy grail sets from the extras of its last GB – displayed alongside it’s prospective home. This is the first GMK set that I’ve gotten in the new packaging, and I really hope that it singlehandedly saves the oceans or whatever they were going for, otherwise it seems like they are cheaping out big time.
As someone who uses the right modifiers almost exclusively, the OrthoVan is very appealing!
3D printed space bars look pretty good. I’ve been waiting for SP to restock 9U but it never seems to happen. 8U is the largest they have in stock.
Looking awesome.
