Yeah, the texture of GMK really disperses the light on dark sets (under direct lighting) making them look much lighter than the renders (I wish renders would account for this). I’m actually not a fan of the texture, and I love the feel as they start to shine. In contrast though, I do like the texture on DSA/DSS and DCS even though it’s more aggressive.
The ass-packaging is unfortunately all GMK.
ah germans not wanting to use plastic man. We are trying to safe the environment on our own
Does this 1970s IBM Model D count? It’s a true mechanical keyboard, after all.
Anyway, got this 27kg behemoth and had to take a family photo. I bought it for £20 and it was advertised as the U and J keys being jammed. It arrived and it works just fine, although the backspace looks like its stuck half-way down despite it functionally working.
The key feel really is special. It’s so smooth and delicious. Feedback is provided by the entire machine itself, turning your entire desk into its auditory and tactile element with its sheer chadness. The experience is electrifying.
Not sure why, but I assumed that the garbage packaging was Drop’s doing.
Makes perfect sense. Garbage packaging means I need to buy a set of real trays to house the caps. So there is now the garbage GMKs trays and a proper set of trays. Zee Germans may make good stuff, but they certainly could learn a lesson or two from the Japanese about efficiency. ![]()
I dont think I understand the use of efficiency. Also its not, as you said, ZE germans fault you dislike the tray it came with and deciding to buy more plastic.
Where is the efficiency (this still seems not to be fitting in the sentence) to package a daifuku mochi in 2 to 3 plastic containers when you sell it at a street food vendor in Japan?
Don’t understand what all the fuss is about. I use Ziploc bags for keycaps and switches. Reusable and takes up minimal space. For storage, I put the bags in shoeboxes.
Quite a few things came in recently,
Some cables (LEMO and YC-8)
Friend sent me his DCS Red Alert to try out on my F1
And a few Kinetic Labs Hippos
I use old ziplocs or old little parcelboxes from amazon.
I like trays, nice to have it in order when u gonna swap.
I think I see what they were getting at. With the old plastic GMK trays, I could keep a base set+ organized and easily identifiable by the artwork on the slipcover. With the new trays, with half of them being broken in some way, I can’t use them for permanent storage which forces me to use another container, plastic or otherwise, and I have to throw the original tray away. This creates waste where there would not have been, future potential waste if I transfer from a ziplock to a better solution down the road, poorer identification of the set (not on a shelf, but in a bag in a box), and a waste of the cool slipcover artwork. What makes it worse, is that people still want the trays (organization and/or collector’s value) when/if you sell your set down the road, making the bagged solution look second rate.
There has been a lot of discussion about GMK’s intent with the new packaging which lean closer to profitability than environmentalism. Granted, I’m not saying a fairly biodegradable material that is lighter, packs better in bulk, and lowers shipping costs is a bad thing at all.
I get your point really I just was confused about the effieciency usage. As a non native speaker sometimes find myself not understanding the deeper meanings of sentences.
As a german I do prefer cardboard as it is better in recycling means. I don understand it breaks more tho.
Got this hand vacuum bc I vape tobacco and tiny leaves are everywhere, including keyboards which makes this relevant to this board
. It also works as a blower depending on which end you plug adapter into. Tempted to try both ends at the same time. It likely uses 18650 battery but haven’t yet figured out how to get at it. Not sure how sturdy it is.
Have you considered a rolling tray?

Rolling tray would make sense if I was rolling. Vaping tobacco is quite a bit messier. I have to put tobacco leaves into a tiny chamber then later scoop out the spent conduction dried leaves out. Take no more than 10 seconds but the remains can go flying like switch springs do and somehow find its way under the keycaps and onto switches.
I miss nicotine like you wouldn’t believe…
Some Zeal stabs for the Grid 650 and…
Holtite sockets. Been wanting to snag some of these for a minute now.
I like how you’ve wanted them for a minute.
To be fair, I genuinely want to try this, but I’ve got a mess of Mill Max sockets I should use up first.
You make a valid point here. GMK is not responsible for the choices I make when storing keycaps. But their old trays were a single solution that (mostly) protected the caps through the manufacturing process, shipping, and end user storage.
From my perspective, the new trays are barely sufficient for shipment, and are throw aways. Seems wasteful, and I would honestly like to see even less packaging if the intent is to minimize cost and environmental impact during the shipment process.
