What did you get in the mail today? (Part 1)

I just got a package today from my fellow r/modelm moderator in Canada, including two keyboards, a bunch of r/modelm stickers and some prototype merch, and some ‘easter eggs’ throughout the boxes.

Two boxes in one (the other is below). Nicely packed.

First up, an NOS IBM 4683 Matrix Keyboard P/N 76X0100 from sometime in the '80s. It was opened up once by my buddy to confirm what it was and what switches it had. The internal assembly is made by Key Tronic for IBM and uses Key Tronic’s Foam & Foil switches, very much a rarity for IBM. I’ll post more photos on a separate thread in a few days time. It also included templates and ‘windows’ for use with making labels for the keycaps.

Second keeb is just a IBM 3471 InfoWindow terminal Model M P/N 1394204 that needs some work (rivets, dirty, etc.). Whilst unremarkable, it was professionally part number converted by CEL for IBM in 2000, likely for use with a different terminal. My best guess is that it was an IBM 3151 keyboard from the late '80s. In any case, I wanted a CEL-touched keyboard for the collection.

And some goodies, including prototype cappy (subreddit mascot) keycap from Unicomp, prototype desk mat, a bunch of stickers, a key ring… and a Canadian Tire 10c note. Not sure what I’m supposed to do with it in the UK.

That’s either the world’s largest ortholinear keyboard or world’s largest macropad. Eitherway, that sucker is huge!

It does look like maybe it was for some sort of terminal or telephony system?

Finding Elvis is a nice touch.

It was for point of sale. Specifically for the IBM 4683, known for being IBM’s first PC-based point of sale system.

SO glad we got a model M master here! I’ve learned so much about them & other IBM keebs from your posts, seriously thank you for your contributions here man!

Thanks, mate! You flatter me! Glad my resources have helped you learn about the majesty that is 55+ years of IBM and family keyboards!

Seriously cool. Too bad it isn’t buckling spring or even Alps. What’s the knobby looking thing next to the numpad?

It’s a barrel for a key core.

Don’t feel bad DHL left my Jules sitting outside the fence of my property that just so happens to be right next to a walking trail… Amazon. FedEx, & UPS do it too, USPS is the only ones that will bring the packages to the door.

I have a PO Box so delivery is always interesting, but I had an Amazon driver leave my package in the lobby of my Post Office because they delivered on a Sunday (never-mind that I dutifully marked that my address couldn’t receive weekend deliveries).

After waiting 17 months, this little set of caps have finally arrived.

My GMK WoB is finally complete.

Some lube to experiment with (thanks for the suggestion, @ajoflo), and some low-tack adhesive film on a roll for machine-cutting (thanks @mwb for putting me up on that)
