Just tried them in-hand so far; nothing crazy but they sound like very clean Nylon switches. A very light swish travel sound with that nice snap at bottom-out.
At the moment what’s standing-out to me here is the absence of spring noise - which itself is probably my most common nitpick with switches I otherwise like the sound of - so I’m gonna call that a good start.
One more note - the tactile one seems pretty neat. It’s got a top-bump, but it’s… rounder(?) than many other up-top bumps I’m used to, like the sharp and snappy Kangaroo. Looking forward to trying them under some keys.
If these aren’t made by Haimu, they sure look like it. The shroud and the bottom holes look just like those on other HM switches I’m familiar with.
I agree, the legend color is way off. They have a tinge of grey to them, but look distinctly grey in the renders (approaching a medium grey honestly). That really sucks man. Unfortunately, the designer signed off on it so it’s not on GMK or a QA issue. I wish there was recourse for this kind of thing. It’s not a “Jessica” (should we speak her name?) level screw up, but still.
When you’re trying them out, I’d love to hear how you think they compare to Outemu silent lineares (peach) or oil kings (they’re just my two reference points at the moment)
Here’s a recording comparing the three in a tester:
The Silent Peach is pretty different from the other two, but the Oil King and Lunalight have a fair bit in common while having their own particular strengths.
On pure smoothness, the Oil King reigns supreme of the three - but for my personal tastes, I prefer the Lunalight overall for its increased stability and extra little bit of clean.* It has a snappy sound without being extra sharp, and it’s a bit less loud than the Oil King.
"clean"
What I mean by “clean” is an absence (or near-absence) of unintentional or otherwise undesirable sound elements such as spring-crunch, leaf-crinkle, ping, rattle, scratch, scrape, etc. - a clean linear, for example, just clacks and maybe has a little swish - while a noisy one clacks, but with some other wiggly crunchy mess behind it, around it, among it.
Wow, that’s amazing, thank you! I just wanted the Oil King and the Peach as two opposite poles that I am familiar with, so I appreciate you’re indulging my very specific request!
They do sound fairly similar, but I see/hear what you mean about clean (I think). I’ve been following the “quiet but not silent linear switches” thread and am awaiting two more switches but now these are on my list as well…I’m intrigued!
Love the scales as well, super helpful
Is there such a thing as too many switches…? Asking for a friend…
Ha, depending on your goals I may or may not be the right person to ask, being comfortably in the “obsessive collector” camp.
I’ve collected well over a hundred full sets (I define “full set” as 61+, most of mine are around 90.), and IIRc @ThereminGoat is rapidly approaching 2000+ individual switch samples. I think @Pandamom98 has a pretty serious collection, too. I’m sure we each have our own reasons and get our own enjoyment out of it - but the critical point is these are things that add enrichment to our lives rather than representing some kind of problem.
(Well - I can only speak for myself - but even if master goat was running on pure compulsive addiction, he’s still working his butt off building a huge database of information that benefits all of us here - so I’d call it a net positive either way.)
Rather than a yes or no, I’ll suggest something of a heuristic:
If switch acquisition / collection is something you genuinely enjoy, that’s a totally fine thing to enjoy.
There’s no magical limit on how many or how much, other than what makes sense for you personally. For example: if the collection starts to interfere with any other aspects of your life, it may then be worth a hard look amongst your other priorities. The most common interference is financial, but time and physical space are also considerations here.
There are plenty of times I choose switches over something else; but only things of equal or lesser value for my life. If anything practical needs doing and there’s only room in the budget for one thing, obviously chose the practical thing; oil change, dinner, bills, etc.
Digging a little deeper into the personal level; collection and obsessive tendencies have a lot of overlap. For me personally, switch collection has been a (mostly) healthy outlet for those tendencies - but watch out for situations where your compulsion to follow the path creates internal dissonance - chances are it’s there for a reason. Genuine desire and compulsion often exist in some kind of mix - but if the compulsion significantly outweighs genuine desire as a motivator for acquiring a thing, this is a signal to step back and try taking an objective look. If it’s a limited time sale but it still has 20 days left, come back in three days and see how you feel about it.
Im at 1370 switches right now, but tbh I just like collecting and seeing all the different types of switches there are. Eventually Id love to do something more with my collection but for now idk.
Not exactly in the mail. My lovely family thought of my ‘hobby’ and stopped when they saw this keyboard on the sidewalk among other computer relics. Unfortunately, it’s of the wrong rubber dome type
My Model-F solenoid and driver just arrived, ready to be tested with the Leyden Jar PCB.
I will try to not do the same mistake that @pixelpusher did by plugging it in the wrong way.
