What did you get in the mail today? (Part 1)

Thank-you for this info!

The other review on that same AliExpress page that you posted the LICHIX Purple Bamboo photos on said that the Purple Bamboo was a favourite stock tactile for that person.

So you are not alone in noticing the superior construction of the Purple Bamboo.

I tried them as individual switches, and a few in hotswap. They didn’t make any horrible noises, so you are right about them avoiding ringing. They didn’t make any especially good sound either, just plastic moving parts, so I think maybe they should be lubed if used in a build.

They seemed like 10-20% lighter Durock Medium Tactiles in terms of feel, but I understand that they are constructed differently. Your photos show very thick boxy stems, and a somewhat elongated light-tactile bump. [I guess the elongation is mostly linear, I’ll have to try it again.]

My impression of the Molly was that the bump was satisfying. But, as others have noted, the factory lubrication is inconsistent. It would need hand-lubing or a more consistent factory-lube to truly shine. The tactility is about Zealio V1R level (with the old Zeal linear leaf).

The KTT Macaron Orange was disappointing for me. Although I purchased samples with an early-bird discount for like $17 CAD, which is cheap, they just aren’t fun to type on. The spring is long, which can be harsh for light-tactiles. And the bottom-out is similarly harsh. Did your stem measurements indicate that is it long-pole? The manufacturer was unclear.

You are right that good switches come from unexpected places. The KTT Mallo was interesting, even though KTT was not known for light-tactiles. Same for the AKKO POM Browns. For me, the best switches I tried in Q4 2023 were surprises. Gateron G Pro Brown 3.0 was actually decent. A definite but small-sized bump, crisp and not grainy. Factory lube is inconsistent, but what can you expect at near-JWICK prices? The weight on G Pro Brown 3.0 is also good, as is stability. It received no hype or fanfare, coming from a Gateron budget line, but seems to be a minor revolution in affordable light-tactiles.

The other big surprise was TTC Gold Brown Pro. I did not like any previous TTC Brown, but these are way better. TTC used new materials for greater smoothness. Anyway, they are poppy Browns and don’t sound too scratchy. Smooth and definite, with strong upstroke. They are a bit loud, though. So, for me, the best new light-tactiles came from new lines from mass-manufacturers with mixed reptuations. [People also like Gateron Beer, but it too has inconsistent factory lube.]

And yes, I tried KTT Matcha in the past, and they recently sold at $40 CAD for 100. But I agree that some of them do ring, even though they are smooth. So they need lubing, which I didn’t want to do.

All of my higher-end builds are light-tactiles. I only use other switches in cheaper, experimental builds.

Mmmm I see that Akko Pom is brown. Which I bought at the start on August 22, 2022)
Still captivates people. For me, this is also the top among light, cherry-like browns. And it stands on my QK65 with an aluminum plate on a permanent sandwich. I only change the keycaps for testing.
Durock I bought all new tactiles and there is the same problem. When you press the bodice, it feels like some kind of metal hair is scratching.

LICHIX Purple chanterelles is a replacement for Akko pom. I wanted the stem to be square in shape, but it had the same feel.

These are the new M2X housings and springs. The factory lube isn’t the worst, but I am going to break mine in for a few hours just to let things spread and settle then decide if further modding is necessary.
I have such a backlog of other switches I need to test/lube/mod that I am hoping that these are just consistent throughout the batches and I don’t have to do too much additional to them.

I will have to commend Cherry on their new spring design, as it’s not awful like the old Cherry springs, but that assumption is only coming off of the fact that I have only tried two of their MX2 switches; the new Nixies and these…

Are you planning on stem shaving them? Does anyone have recommendation for how to treat these stems with your precious keycaps?

I’ll probably just use them as is. I’ve used all of my caps on clears in the past and didn’t have any cracks. But yeah, they are pretty much as tight as clears. I do have a Geon stem trimmer. I might try to slim down a few. I will say, compared to a pretty old batch of clears that I have, these certainly sound a lot better. Less spring noise, less leaf ping.

We got our new shelves in to put as many of our Lego sets as possible on - we still have something like 10 sets to build still and had no space for any more (these shelves are already going to be filled by the time we finish the sets we have…)

Not all stores write the name. You need to either look at the photo or wait for them to write which version. 3 or 5.

MX2A-51NN

NN-3pin NW-5pin

Summary

I didn’t even take a comparison photo.
Since I received version 3 pin. Externally there are simply no differences from my brown cherries.
The difference is in the spring, and they also write in the datasheet that there is polishing on the stem. Therefore, probably both the black and brown versions feel smoother than the old versions.

Got DCS Dark Skies in from NK today! Can’t say I’m a huge fan of SP’s new packaging, but I will say it is definitely better than bags.

Received the Gateron Milkshakes today. Full POM gateron longpole linears. And, man. They are by far the best full-POM linear switches i have tried so far, even beating the Jerrzi full POM switches. Almost no wobble, very, very smooth and very nice to type on. I immediately threw them into my Rule60v2, which also arrived today. I had to modify the plate a little bit to allow for split backspace, as the plate originally did not allow for it, despite the PCB doing so. And that PCB is… something else entirely. With this layout, the 2 keys on the top right and top left corners are north facing, the entire R1 except the spacebar is north facing, enter key is east facing, \ key is west facing, mapping the “super” key (as seen on photo) to control makes it behave as if it’s mapped to win key… while the left “Alt” key is actually mapped to be the win key but actually behaves like control… just… what even…
But, if anyone actually has the plate files for that keyboard or something, let me know.

Is that the same as the gateron smoothie switch?

I didn’t know about these but they look quite nice.

I see them for sale directly from Gateron:

Also saw these with a newly designed stem

Anyone tried these?

Oh, yes, they are the same as the Smoothies. They must have changed names or something. The taobao listing on the gateron store calls them “Milkshake” and the promotion images also are very milk themed and has the word “milkshake” written on them. unless milkshake and smoothie are written the same way in chinese. But yes. They are very nice either way, best full POM so far, imo.

I found them on Chosfox under “Milkshake” - thanks for the heads-up about them!

I also saw TKC’s “fruit smoothie” switches being sold there as “gummy” or something like that. Makes me wonder how many switch names on either side of the pond come from Google Translate. :stuck_out_tongue:

This is a feature of Chinese names.
They give their names from the words state or feeling)
And then it is translated into our simple primitive language))))))))))))

Haven’t read the Manga, but big fan of the Zom 100 keycaps I got today. These will no doubt look stellar on a ton of different boards. TUT makes some very creative sets.

Quality is pretty much perfect. Minimal but well executed packaging. Perfectly straight space bars. Caps are between 1.65 and 1.7mm thick.

Some potato pics while I decide the perfect keyboard for them! Maybe my polycarbonate Lilith. Still haven’t built it :smiling_face_with_tear:
