What did you get in the mail today? (Part 2)

Yeah I’m pretty sure this cast is a call back to the OG Clack skulls. Wish I had grabbed one of those back in the day. They were sold from like $15 to $30 on Elite Keyboards way back when & now some of the rarer Clack Skull colorways can fetch over 1k!?

Silent MX2As have claimed the spot as my new favorite switch. They sound and feel just right to me.

It was kind of interesting to see that MX2As seem to implement the donut dip method.

I got some for the first time a while back, and still spring swapped them but had luck oiling the new springs and then just dropping them in with some of the old residual lube still on the bottom housing.

Yes, many people are using MX2A Browns stock nowadays. As the spring sort-of self-lubricates.

This is also the case for MX Orange, and you see the people happy with the silent linears. Not sure how the new silent tactiles will fare.

Do the MX2A co-operate with the same springs that MX1A worked with? My spring-swapped MX2A Browns seem to be working fine, Geon springs, but I have no other Geon-spring switches to compare them with.

Been a few months since I researched the same question, but I used my typical TX springs in the MX2As and haven’t noticed any issues :+1:

Cheeky sticker for my chattery set of Type-Rs since they’ll be living on the shelf instead of in a keeb.

Spoon Sports is, among other things, known for their tuned editions of Honda’s Type-R trim cars.

Do they have silent scratch?

Doesn’t seem like it!

The originals sure did, which is what I didn’t like about them - but the 9 I placed in a tester are so-far free of that sandy experience.

I wouldn’t say they are particularly smooth in either a buttery or ice-skate-y sort of way, but I would say they seem a lot more smooth than the old MX silent linears.

There is a bit of inconsistency in that a minority of them make a light chattering sound in-use, which they do have in-common with the older Cherry silents.

I also feel like they’ve become significantly smoother the more I used them. This is purely anecdotal and based upon 0 rigorous research and objective tests.

My guess is:

  • if they really are smoother - The lube in the MX2A switches have moved around the switch more.

  • if I just inaccurately perceive them to be smoother - I like cherry switches and am already desensitized and repetitive use has just made my hands more accommodated to them.

I received and reviewed this fancy KiiBOOM LOOP65, with the pretty cool multi-part and multi-color aluminum case.

Warning: It’s a great offer with great out-of-the-box typing experience, however, despite being VIA-compatible, I was unable to set up SpaceFN for some reason.

Got all the parts in I need to convert a H87C to using a JST port instead! I do have those 2 H87nu PCBs coming sometime this week which natively use a JST connector, but talking to Hiney he said I should be able to desolder the USB C port, dremel off the tab & solder on a 4 pin JST SH header to a H87c to get what I want also. So probably gonna mess with that tonight & save the H87nu PCBs for other builds.

I ordered some less expensive Keyreative caps a few weeks ago. They showed up today

These are the “Old Seaside” UV printed ABS caps.

Description from the website:
Inspired by the 1980s California coast, these keycaps bring the faded charm of beachside cafes and the warm hues of sunsets to your keyboard.

Yeah I dunno about that but I liked the colors. There’s no novelties really.

This is the first Keyreative UV print set I’ve tried. The fonts are good, even on modifiers. You can feel them raised up but I don’t really notice it when typing.

A few issues with the set. The stepped caps is not made correctly. I’ve seen this issue before with ePBT. Not a big deal since it doesn’t rub. Also I could use non stepped caps.

The website says 1.25mm thickness. I measure between 1.20 or 1.22. They don’t feel thin, they feel quite sturdy. But it’s not 1.25mm.

The biggest problem I had was the comma key. It stuck down. Head scratcher moment but I determined the stem was molded incorrectly and was thick on the bottom side. Some careful chisel work fixed that.

Space bar was slightly reverse banana, but seems to have no issues when mounted.

Layout options are pretty bare bones. Also, what you see here is the only option for colors. There aren’t non accented enter or escape keys. What you see mounted is what you get.

The colors are classic beige, muted blue, brown and coral. They go very well together. It’s a nice, harmonious color palette. The product photos from Keyreative show the blue with a more greenish tone. My photo here is more accurate

I like the way they feel and sound. It’s not too different from GMK (except for the UV print).

But I paid $69 after taxes and shipping. I don’t know, that feels a bit too expensive for what you get, plus the issues I found. Maybe if Divinikey sells it for $50 with free shipping it would be a better deal.

The colors and icon aesthetics make me think “parcel service” - I like the look!

Thanks for the review! That’s actually a good set for a beige NCR-80!
