What keyboard trap do you fall into over and over again?

Many of us have been in the hobby for years, maybe more than a decade.

What keyboard traps/mistakes do you still make despite knowing better? :grinning:

For me it is simple - About every two years I build an ortho board and try to use it and fail miserably!

Speaking of which, I am about due… didn’t Drop just release a new Planck?

Would artisan keycaps count here…

Assuming I’ll like any other layout than Alice, TKL, or 60% :stuck_out_tongue:

ā€œThis board is really good. I should have 10 of them.ā€

Oh man, this is a good one:

  1. Buying ONE MORE cheap set of keycaps because they’re on sale or I don’t have that profile.
  2. Designing and building a one-off hand wire for a layout that I have no reason to suspect I’ll actually prefer, but looks kind of interesting.
  3. Reasonably priced vintage boards that are decent are ALWAYS full size, and I don’t need any more full size boards.
  4. Designing a board around a specific keycap kitting is gonna make it way harder to change keycaps later. This in particular would seem self-evident, yet here we are. :joy:

This minute iteration on the mx-compatible design is actually significant!

Still gets me every now and then. Sometimes it’s even true! Sometimes.

You’re all my kind of people. I feel seen.

I fell into the trap of making a point to only buy boards that had different layouts, justifying it as ā€œwell, they each have something very unique about them.ā€ I now have about a dozen boards that all require varying numbers of switches and stabilizers plus layout quirks that rule out a lot of ā€œbaseā€ keycap sets.

The other trap is that my keyboard mapping is wildly inconsistent so every time I switch out boards it takes me a few attempts to find basic things like ā€œhomeā€ or ā€œmuteā€ or ā€œdeleteā€ and I can’t figure out where the goddamn piece of shit reset keys are for flashing my non-VIA/VIAL boards to make it consistent!

Thinking I need to cover every layout under the sun at all times, and then not using two thirds of the caps I have because most of my boards are small to mid-sized, and I only usually have one set of alphas for each set…even with all my boards built, I’m storing SO MANY extra caps and switches because I’m prepping to cover a 30% all the way up to one of those huge boards with two F-rows, plus some sort of Alice, for every set of caps and switches I buy…I don’t even have an Alice layout yet

Oh this is a good one I fall for all the time too! Even when I have one specific board in mind I am buying whatever set for, somehow all the child kits end up in my cart! Switches are another trap I fall into a lot. I literally have enough batches of different unused switches to last me for years, but the second I see a new switch that interests me into the cart they go! Also I can never order just enough switches to cover whatever board I’m planning on using them in with a few extras just in case. The lowest amount of switches I’ll get when ordering a batch is 108 or 110 depending on if they are sold in packs of 10 or 36.

Gotta learn them shortcuts. Always MORE. I’m keyboard krazy @_@

The repeated mistake that will never change for me is when I’m putting keycaps on, I sometimes mix up the semicolon and quotation mark, same for N and M. And because I touch type, I don’t notice it until I look at them closely a few weeks later. Sometimes I look up the keyboard layout for reference, and sometimes I think I’m confident to memorize the layout until that happens lol.

Getting back into the hobby…I’m doing it now :grimacing:.

Thinking that I’ll settle on one plate long term, NEVER happens. I think the longest any keyboard has stayed in its configuration has been 6 months and counting (Mode Sonnet V1, PC plate + Hojicha Reserves). Before I was swapping between POM, FR4, Alu all the time and could never pick one to stick with.

Same thing with my Brutal V2 1800, right now using POM and pretty satisfied but still occasionally thinking about finding that perfect combo to work with Alu. Ergo Clears on Alu are amazing but with any switch more tactile like my JWK Twilights or T1s, I still find Alu a little too stiff even with the Brutal’s single sided gasket. PC/POM ends up being my favourite most of the time, PC on top mounts and POM on gasket. I tried the Mode PP plate on the Sonnet but the blend of PP they use is way too soft for my preference.

This SO much haha - it’s the ā€œjust in caseā€ that gets me all the time:

And I’ve already got a couple tactiles on my mind that I want to try…trying to stick with buying one for the collection and not 100+

This one I relate to. I always buy at least 90. I mean, I have 139 keyboards with 65 or less keys, but I think ā€œman, what if I love these switches and only buy 70 and then they sell out… and then I can’t put them in a hypothetical TKL??ā€

100% what I’m thinking too! I figure with those numbers I’ll be able to cover up to a full size (even though I have yet to get a full sized custom) & have a switch or two for the switch collection.

This explains like 75% of my keyboard purchases.

It’s strange why you all didn’t write what literally everyone has. And it doesn’t even depend on how many years or winters you’ve had the hobby.
Stabilizers)
Saw a new one and immediately thought. This one definitely won’t be…

Ohh yeah good call, that is something I do for sure! A new stab comes out with any change from the OG Cherry design & I have to buy a pack or two!

I am so glad that I haven’t had to deal with stabilizers in years. None of my ergo boards need them.
