Finally finished my PP plate build for Hiney TKL One today. What a difference it made too! Went from a loud, clacky, & stiff build with Gat Smoothies on a alum plate. To a much quieter, much deeper sounding, fairly soft build with KTT Vanilla Ice Creams on a PP plate. I really prefer this version since a lot of my builds lately have trended towards the louder, clacky side. Also I think it looks super sharp with KKB Vibrato on it!
PP plates make all the difference. Love the build man.
Alright, I’m sold - where’s your favorite place to get PP plates?
I’ve only experienced them in my JJW boards since he’s such a big fan of them. I have heard good things about these two vendors though:
Thanks! Might have to give them both a try; I’m already a fan of Hype’s FR4 goodies.
You’ve sold me too on the PP plates. Going to try get the plate files for my Mammoth75 then order some from Hype.
Me reading the last few comments on this thread:
My mid-height Outemu Black came in, so I was out of excuses on designing the plate for my cut-down board. I’m focusing more on low-profile height rather than length (depth?) and width, so I gave myself ample room for the MCU and its wiring. In fact, as I look at it now, I’m wondering if there’s enough room to turn the MCU 90 degrees and have the cable come out the back. Hmmm…
I am also debating whether to include that extra key up at the top and running jumpers to a spare switch footprint under that lower-right blocker. It’s a silly nod to those early ADB Apple boards with a power button and breaks up the visual monotony. I have a couple of extra 1.25u I could zap a novelty design onto. Sadly, I used up all my 1.75u for the board and the two 1.5u on dye-sub experiments, though I’m tempted to just take the one with “FIRE” handwritten on it and coat it in pink/red before baking it in the oven. Still, keeping it might complicate routing the wires from the matrix to the MCU, and I’ve been aiming for simplicity on this build. The initial plan is not even to enclose the sides, as I’ve been fairly pleased with the numpad I made like that. Finally, I also have what I need to do a slightly higher-profile stack, but I really want to see how it looks floating, and I’ve learned I don’t really like the look of a bunch of laser-charred Masonite edges, so more layers will mean 3D printing, which this design doesn’t need yet.
Just to chime in on this Hype is where I have been getting my PP plates, but I have ordered other materials through Cbbplanet. Both are good vendore IME, so I’d say just go with whoever is cheaper & closer to you for shipping.
A keyboard I’ve been meaning to build for some time:
Ikki68 Aurora R1 by Wuque Studio
- 01 Fairbanks PCB (USBC, hotswap, underglow, no key lighting)
- FR4 Plate
- KBDfans Roller switches
- Maiz clip-in stabilizers
- MTNU Susu
- R2 Fuji badge
I went with the monochrome mods and Jiji keycap from the first run.
First time using the Maiz stabs; I’m impressed so far.
Also first time using the roller-type switches in a build; just as others have said, very stable. Perfect for this build, as the bezel is in-tighter than the average keyboard such that some keys scrape the edges. I had to sand down MT3 to work with one of these, but not so with MTNU and the Rollers: just clean clacks and laser-straight caps.
Bless SK Knight & Maiz stabs for curing my build funk; I’m both picky about and unskilled with stabs, so I’ve had a pile of builds backing up - I’m thinking it just might be open season on that stack now.
Started lubing some Cherry Browns. I decided to use 205g0 cause I like the feel of my Blacks, and I think that Cherry can benefit more from this lube to cover the scratch. I decided on only lubing the back of the stem (more to help with spreading out any excess on my brush) and the two side rails.
I am spring swapping to Geon 14mm 57.5g and throwing some Deskey films on there too
Starting work on a Selectric-esque design that I’m trying to make as peak 2015 as possible, down to the Geek Hack and Deskthority novelties.
My cat is helping.
Seeing this scene, is a thing of beauty.
Even though I’m not a huge fan of how SA feels, I do love how it looks! Making this a throwback set like you are already got me on the hook! Can’t wait for some of your designs to become reality, your Wyse sets are killer & this looks just as awesome. Small request too, could you render this with a set of Space Cadet alphas if you get the chance? I think it would go really well with this set & should sell just fine as an add on alphas kit to not detract from your original vision. Keep up the awesome work man!
Thank you, I appreciate it! Still waiting to hear back from SP about DCS and/or SA SMRT; they seemed to be interested in both, but it can often be weeks or months between them returning my emails. SA Dasher Nights should be finishing manufacturing in the next few weeks; I’m estimating a September or October in-stock sale?
I can take a stab at Space Cadet legends! I don’t know if any exist that are pre-made to load into Blender. If not, I’ll need to recreate them, which will be a challenge. As far as actually having them be in the official design though, I think they’d be too similar to Symbiosis to be able to run.
Oh yeah you do got a point, I forgot about Symbiosis. Well don’t worry about the renders then if it’s something that probably wouldn’t be feasible. Big fan of the set as it stands!
Thanks! Not sure when it’s happening; it’s the project I’ve been working on that makes it difficult for me to run the big-ass SA moogle kit I was playing around with the other day anytime soon. Hopefully someone else will take that idea and make it their own.
I want to try to keep the kitting simple, so a numpad and spacebar kit are the only other ones I’ve been planning. Colors are drawn from a bunch of sets from that era - WBO cream legends, GD grey alphas, BDH blue mods. The red and black are newer colors, REL and NEZ. I wanted shades that had kind of a faded, yellowed look to them.
Did some needed work on the Boston. Switches swapped to my Cherry Silent Nixie mod, added a new D knob and changed my 2u shift. I think a black key fits the vibe a bit better.
I’m looking for screws with that multi colored chroma effect and don’t really want to order them from RNDKBD due to the shipping cost and wait time. Anyone know where I could find M3 x 10 and M3 x 8 in small quantity?
Maybe something like this? “Oil slick,” “Rainbow,” or “iridescent” would seem to be good search terms. Black screws might also be nice.
Oh hellz yeah, I didn’t even think about Ali. Exactly what I’m after, thanks!!!
