[GB] the Heavy Grail, a Norbauer housing for the HHKB

Quick question, are the Pro 2 backplates also supposed to have the DIP switch cutout on the bottom?

They are not. Only the Pro 3 is able to have them.

Ah. I guess mine slipped past

Our quality control inspection protocol for the pink plates (agreed on with the factory) specifies that only the areas of the switch plate that are visible after assembly have to be uniform in color. (We’ve only seen this de-pigmentation issue on the Pantone-matched pink plates.) By way of background, this isn’t to save money or material. We arrived at this agreement because, in our tests and long R&D process on the injection molds, we actually discovered that there is trade-off in the heat/pressure settings to get the best fit and tolerances (and thus smoothness of switch) and the settings needed to keep the color completely uniform at the edges of the part. We of course chose to favor the correct performance and geometry of the part over the cosmetics of an area of the part that isn’t visible after assembly. However, if the yellowing on your plate is visible when assembled into the housing or troubles you particularly, just let us know and we’ll work with you to get a satisfactory outcome.

We’re actually working with the factory now to get some pink replacement parts that we rejected because there were de-saturated regions visible when assembled into the housing. We’ll be emailing folks with affected orders once we’ve got everything sorted out.

Generally speaking, incidentally, it’s best to e-mail us directly if there is something about your order that you don’t feel is optimal and we’ll see to that it’s tracked in our normal system without falling through the cracks.

I figured that was the case, it just seems like I got a Pro 3 bottom with a Pro 2 top so I’ll shoot an email to get that resolved.

Only slightly related to the Heavy Grail, but since the most recent discussion was here in this thread…

So here is the issue I discovered today with the 23u. In order to make a housing for it, I would have to not exactly match the Norbaforce. The general design language would be the same, but it would have to be ever-so-slightly taller than the Norbaforce due to necessary clearance for the weird screwed-on Topre breakout PCB at the back.

Do you guys think it’s still worth doing?

I think it’s still worth it. I imagine 23u owners are pairing it with various topre boards, not just the 87u / R2 TKL / Norbaforces. And based on the drawings, the difference would be a couple of mm at best?

Is it taller than the NF with feet attached?

Well that’s it. Guess you’ll have to make a Norbaforce Mark IV.

@joshuarubin seconded like you wouldn’t believe. + voting for Astro Purple, Retro, Motorsport, Sunset Pink

I’m still extremely interested. What if it was designed with only a single angle supported matching the higher norbaforce angle? That way the front of it could match better potentially.

Side note, will this also support the breakout PCB for detachable cables?

Yeah this wouldn’t bother me, i’d likely have this further away from the board similar to how I place my macro pads. the overall design language being the same is enough for me, no need for exact dimensions personally!

Got mines in this morning and I am in love with it. Need to start shopping for topre keycaps now though :weary:

Somehow these are still in stock:

That’s actually a pretty good idea! Let me experiment with that this weekend.

Yup! It uses the Norbaforce 87U breakout PCB. I ordered 100 in advance with the Norbaforce batch for exactly this purpose. Unfortunately, I believe that this means this will be a limited production of <=100 units.

Sounds like there’s going to be some serious competition for those spots. Dibs!

Looks great!

Is that a topre keycap set?

Thanks! And nope, it’s ePBT Kuro Shiro. I’m using des sliders for the 1u keys, jtk sliders for the enter/left shift and a topre pbt spacebar.
