Glorious GMMK Pro

They kinda sorta admitted to overfarting their asses.

Allegedly the CEO responded earlier to the /u/Gigahawk post:

I read that whole thing as, “in the future, everything will work”.

I dunno, if they fix the issues with QMK or their own software, to make layout customization possible then I’d be happy. I won’t forget this though, and the experience will color any future interactions I choose to have with them. If any.

Hmmm,

I kinda read it the same way as well, but isn’t that always a bit concerning? It feels like they they’re patching things to where it should have been at launch. I don’t know how much is complaining and how much might be predatory in that regard :man_shrugging:

But at the same time, I also don’t think they could have foresaw the chip shortage being as extreme as it currently is.

Ultimately I think people want better QMKness with their keyboards, and the promised VIA compatibility.

Edit: and for their software to suck less

Yes, I didn’t find their response to be satisfying at all.

I also find their explanation about their Core software to be puzzling. They claim they were trying to make it better than previous iterations, and yet in so many ways it was not. If anything, the previous software they had was at least focused on the device and was easier to use; not to mention smaller than the 440MB install of the Core software.

It’s also not just that they haven’t documented well, and they haven’t, but they also had features in the software active that clearly don’t work (i.e. layers). That could have easily been tested by literally anyone in their company.

/u/Gigahawk coming in hot with more info on the GMMK Pro. I’m just a humble fool and don’t even own anything Glorious other than a wrist rest, but it is awesome to see them care enough about the community to take the time to dig https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/n04snx/gmmk_pro_hardware_analysis/

I haven’t been paying much attention to this since launch but

What the fuck?

Edit to add: I thought they might be bundling the entire .net framework but the latest version of that is 120MB. I really don’t understand how you can take that much space for a keyboard flashing program, might dig through the exe tomorrow to see what theyre doing.

I appreciate Gigahawk’s informed calling out of Glorious’ half-arsed replies and at the same time am amused about the fanbois thanking them for their “transparency”. I don’t think following up your marketing bullshit with some salami slicing qualifies as transparent.

Yeah, he does a really decent job laying it out in a logical, clear manner. No real emotion although the frustration is palpable.

What’s also strange, is I don’t recall the “Beta” flag being on their download links previously. It feels like this is new.

I suppose it’s even more hilarious that they couldn’t get their software out of beta before the production release of their hardware.

Just for posterity, here it is as installed on my local PC.

And here’s the WinDirStat analysis of the folder. This ASAR file is huge.

What I dont like is telling people there would be QMK and VIA support and then not having it.

I do get the chip shortage as I work in a company that is affected by it but then say it BEFORE. These chip shortages have been going on since summer last year

That’s mainly node.js bloat supporting the Electron app.

The archive also contains an Adobe font file. I wonder if they bought the correct licence to redistribute it.

Don’t count on Glorious to be posting reviews they don’t like.

I recently got an email from Glorious asking me to rate my GMMK, so I did, honestly, and this was their response.

That’s funny, it shows there’s no reviews though on the project page.

And then on one of the Discord servers I’m a member of, one of the folks there, independent of me, had the exact same experience. Here’s what she wrote:

So maybe they just haven’t gotten around to posting these and they will, but that’s at least two that currently aren’t registering.

Their advice is rich too, when I contacted their Customer Service Team for support, they suggested I go seek help from the community on their Discord server.

:poop:

I know this keyboard will never be for me but is it that bad? I thought reviews were generally positive.

As far as just being a keyboard goes, it’s not bad at all. I like it well enough. So hardware-wise, they did a fine job.

My general feeling is that Glorious/GMMK is trying to cherry pick the good stuff in the hobby without fully buying in. And I am OK with that as long as they can provide good products. That said, I think people in this hobby can be very discerning and Glorious underestimated their target audience.

To be fair, it’s Adobe. They neither need nor deserve that money.
