Same. I’m actually a fan of clicky/loud as hell boards. So this is a fun challenge. I hope it’s quiet enough for him.
For a re-usable adhesive I’ve been using some black sticky tack.
That certainly sounds more manageable than hot glue. I might give that a try. Thanks!
Assembling an office-friendly silent 60% for our company’s new IT guy. Pretty standard build aside from the switches:
- GH60 rev. C PCB, black
- Soft braided mini USB cable, black
- KBDFans basic plastic case, black
- Silicone standoff o-rings
- Dampening foam
- Custom POM plate (may apply black vinyl)
- Lubed & filmed Black Ink U4’s
- Lubed screw-in stabs w/ vinyl dampening
- and the cherry on top, MT3 WoB
Snappy, quiet, and striking - but understated. I think he’s gonna love it.
He better do!
Badass sleeper board (if you can even call it that). I’ll bet it will type like a dream.
Got any more information on “Lubed screw-in stabs w/ vinyl dampening”? Are you doing the thing where you put heat shrink on the wire? Or is this a different method?
wow, black ink U4’s sound great, what spring weighting did you go with for them?
About the stabs - I honestly don’t know what brand they are, but they have embedded brass threads. I’ll be doing the heat-shrink mod as well as using adhesive vinyl strips below the stab stems instead of cloth tape; it should similarly take the edge off of bottoming-out on the PCB.
@Dr.Doof - I have loads of ~60g Panda springs, so I’m going to try those first. I have other versions of this switch with progressive springs and I love them, but those weren’t quite in the budget.
Was the mod a bit too… stringy?
Isn’t that a bit too thick for a floss mod ?
Mush. Completely eliminates that sweet buckling spring snap.
Yep. I was using thinner strands
Putting together some smooth, silent tactiles for my current build project;
- Ink Black housings
- U4 stems
- Ink Black springs*
- NK_ films
- 205g0
These switches will be paired with a POM plate and a good ol’ GH60 PCB. To keep the build within budget, the client went with a basic plastic tray-mount case - but I’ll be doing the o-ring burger mod to get the most out of it.
*Edit: the BSUN springs just didn’t feel quite right to me, but these do.
Well this is the most satisfying thing I’ve done in a while. Making use of my new desoldering gun. Boy was this easy and great.
Kind of cool to see these Apple logos too!
Some of the stuff you find on PCBs is awesome! That ALPS logo I had as my avatar awhile back was a pic I took off some PCB I harvested!
