Despite where it came from, the Sirius is a super nice board IME too. I haven’t used mine in quite awhile now, but set it up with a POM plate I cut to be a half plate & Equalz 62g Tangerines which produced a very nice soft typing feel with a nice subdued but not foamy sound. Then I also agree about the design of the case. It’s nothing we haven’t seen before but for whatever reason it speaks to me as well. Anyways enjoy the new build bud!

Edit: Your’s looks particularly nice with the white POM keycaps too! How do they affect the sound?

Thanks, I’m lovin this build. I was going to cut a white PC plate but turns out my diode laser can’t cut white lol woops.
The POM keycaps honestly sound like thick PBT, IMO. The build sounds loud and deep but that might be more of the switch/plate/case combo. I’ll try to do a sound test later.
The caps are really slick and that’s the only thing kind of throwing me off a little. Not a bad thing at all, all this POM feels like I’m touching hard candy.

Where did the Sirius come from? I don’t know anything about it really, just saw it on NK pictures, really liked how it looked and snagged one off mechmarket.

It was a Project KB board, they were one of the vendors that left a bunch of customers holding the bag when they went out of business. Sirius happened way before that though so nothing to think too much about.

I have a WKL one. I call it my fancy milk jug case. My favorite thing about it is that it doesn’t have a daughter board. For some reason, I feel like PCBs with “universal” daughter boards somehow made everything less compatible. Mine has a zeal60 PCB in it! Even works with VIA

lol milk jug.

I feel the same about daughterboards. Personally I don’t really notice the added isolation a DB supposedly adds. The connections are just an extra point of wear and tear, and it really does make it harder to source compatible PCBs. I actually just commissioned a custom PCB with JST thru holes for a variety of DB cases. Just waiting on JLCPCB atm.

If pogo-pins or some other kind of tether-free connection were the standard I’d probably like them more, if only because I do appreciate the lower cable connection points on my boards-with-daughters.

Totally agreed on it reducing cross-compatibility and adding points of wear - and for me (someone who frequently disassembles some of their boards), inconvenience and having to be a bit more careful than otherwise. That JST cable is the only thing I like less about the metal Portico vs the plastic one - the latter is so easy to get apart and back together quickly with no worries about dainty cables or connections.

It’s really interesting to hear how this works out in practice. I appreciate the explanation; makes much more sense to me now. I couldn’t help but chuckle at this:

I’ve done similar work on an oak butcher block slab using a dull blade on an under-powered circular saw… and the cut looked equally godawful.

I love the idea of daughterboards, but have to agree that in practice, the fragile connections are a new point of failure and definitely have reduced compatibility.

Ease of disassembly and reassembly is a big appeal for me too. I’ve been seriously considering picking up the Neo Ergo due in large part to the screwless ball and catch case design and the magnetic pin PCB connections. Not quite the same, but the wilba.tech Salvation’s two-screw mounting points and universal 60% compatibility were big selling points for me as well.

Don’t you know? It was just shou sugi ban!

I’ve done just enough woodworking to have burned my share of cuts, particularly with cheap router bits taking too-large passes. Sharp blades, straight lines, clean cuts.

It’s not a bug, it’s an unplanned feature!

Indeed.

On Saturday, I attended MKUK Meetup 2024 in Leeds, UK to fly the IBM flag and give a talk! I brought a ‘robust’ sampling of my collection…

Some more pictures of the Hexatana, though currently waiting for more Sunset switches as I was also no fan of the Twilight Choc Silents.
