New build: Compact Ergo / Stock MX Purples / Alu Plate / GMK Muted Keycaps recorded with my MacBook. I like the stock Cherry sound, not everybody’s taste though.
Yunzii AL71
- Pantheon “This Switch Is Called” linears
- NicePBT Cherry profile keycaps
- Durock V3 plate-mount stabilizers lubed with 205g0
- Stock polycarb plate, foam, and plastic sheet setup
Sounds better than I ever expected a budget keyboard to, and it’s got feels to match.
There’s some higher-pitch / comparatively reduced creaminess going on with the backspace and space bar - not sure if that’s down to the chassis, stabs, keys themselves, or something else - but still more clean than I ever expected plate-mount stabilizers to be.
Damn TSIC switches are deep! Reminds me a lot of the Keygeek x MZ Y3s I’ve been rocking lately. Might have to grab a batch when I get a chance since I’ve been in a deeper sounding switch swing lately. All the HMX switches gave me my fill of mid to high pitched LOL!
I replaced the unfortunately chattery Gateron Type-R switches in my Tess65 with Strawberry Wine V2 linears by Sarokeys & Geonworks; maybe not as interesting, but much more functional, and very satisfying. Strawberry Wines are one of my go-to linears when I just want no-fuss creamy goodness, and the Designer Studio Adaptive stabilizers haven’t missed yet.
First time recording with my DSLR and separate audio.
Any recommendations/tips for setting up audio so there isn’t so much noise and resonance? I swear the keyboard doesn’t sound resonant at all IRL.
Very nice camera angle for a typing test if I do say so myself.
Thanks! I would love to figure out the post processing and audio so I can eventually catalog my keyboards like so many of these youtubers, but I’ve never recorded an actual video in my life (besides random cellphone videos) lol. I watch so much youtube but am now realizing how much knowledge goes into each stupid little video ![]()
I’ll keep tinkering.
That was my thought as well, seems like it would be fun to do lol. There’s more that goes into keyboard recording than I first expected, I’m hoping I can further improve what I’m doing and get closer to what I hear in person
For reducing noise and resonance, that’s going to be a game of experimenting with mic placement, type, and isolation from the desk, along with getting your recording environment quieter, but you’ll reach a point where the noise of the recording setup can sometimes just be high and only way to fix that is to improve the equipment. It’s somewhat different per setup/environment so it’s a lot of trial and error from my experience lol. For me the most natural result I’ve gotten was placing the microphone at head level where I would normally sit and make sure the capsule was directly pointed at the alphas at the angle of where I sit. Also making sure to partially or fully decouple it from the desk with a proper shockmount or an external stand. But it’s a lot of other things as well, but that’s where I would start if I wanted something that attempted to sound accurate to irl (but only so far you can get)
Here’s an example of what I’ve gotten for now, there’s a lot that can be improved though
Not the best board to showcase audio lol but it works for now until I make some further improvements to the setup (hopefully in a few days). If it ends up something I’m happy with, I’ll post some of the rationale behind why I did what I did and some of my experiences in trying out a lot of different recording methods lol
Thanks for the write up. I’ll have to keep playing around with my setup, but maybe one of my friends will finally convince me to get a better mic haha
The mic placement is a good idea, and I never knew those things were called shock mounts.
How do you not pick up your breathing when it’s at head level ? lol I’m such a heavy breather everyone says I breathe like I’m fat.
PS that Transition Lite sounds like glass!
PPS welcome!
I ended up messing around with mics quite a bit because I’m picky but it’s just a nice to have for sure in general. Just ends up being finding the best fit for your desired sound/placement/environment/etc
Carefully controlled breathing lol, have to make sure not to bump anything either. I also end up leaning back a bit since it’s a bit awkward to have it right in my face and I don’t want any close reflections influencing the sound either lol (which also likely reduces breathing noises)
One day I just felt like building a foamed up board, this was it lol
Thanks! Have been lurking for awhile here lol
An ever so slight noise gate can help with that.
Finally set my mic back up! Here’s my F1 with 1mm alum. plate & Keygeek Y2s!
Edit: The keycaps are GMK CYL Dolch R5, fogpt to mention it in the main post.
Yooo the pixel art Goku profile picture goes hard.
Here’s what the current setup is like now that it’s being more fine tuned, some random ramblings on recording a keyboard and some of the shortcomings/difficulties/nuances of it are in the desc and comments of the video (from what I’ve found out personally at least lol). Still working on it, but getting closer to what I think is a good result
No more overly long paragraphs about recording like in the previous, back to boards lol
There’s still a noise issue I’m having with one channel of the preamp that I can’t track down, I hope it’s not something wrong with it, but just gotta keep at it until I find it I guess lol
