What did you get in the mail today? (Part 1)

Prints, stickers, and cards - oh my!

Lovely art from @Seo_bun’s website, CntrlKeys

A SpaceFN (tap spacebar = space, hold spacebar = layer x) setup allowed me to use 60%'s no problem. I have my navigation cluster on a separate layer that is easily reachable with my thumb on the spacebar.

u = home, i = up, o = end, j = left, k = down, l = right, backspace = delete.

Big ole switch.

That PC in the background looks really small though. Why are the screw holes so big?

SFFPC4Lyfe!

Sadly I will NOT be getting this in the mail. Bidding already up to $1500 with 6 days to go… I really thought I had a shot at it too for an hour or two.

Some DSA PBT keycaps that I’m eager to put on, and a Cherry sample pack. I found that Clear and White have an interesting feel so I might do something with Whites at some point.

Be careful with MX whites. One or two loose do feel great, but IME Cherry can not get them to be consistent. They apply a small dab of lube on the click jacket at the factory which makes them wildly inconsistent. From ones that sound just like a MX blue all the way to ones that do not click at all. I would grab double what you need to cherry pick good ones if you are set on using MX whites.

Sounds like a fair warning: the one I have is fairly unlubricated right now. Should I look into BOX Whites as well since they seem to be a low-tactility clicky too?

BOX Whites are a pretty nice low-weight tactile, yeah!

Hopefully! I don’t want to be replacing these anytime soon.

Sadly, they’re only laser ablated :frowning:

You can give them a try if you think you’ll like them, but I wouldn’t consider either MX or BOX whites low tactility TBH. Although BOX whites will be the least tactile of the Kaihl clickbar style switches. MX whites are often called a soft clicky, but that is not referring to the amount of tactility it has. It’s referring to the fact the click collars are greased & that makes MX whites produce a softer/quieter click. MX whites are a weird switch all around IMO. They were actually made before MX blues & not intended to be clicky at all. They came out of a desire to produce a switch with a good amount of hysteresis, the fact the design clicked was actually unwanted at first. That’s why Cherry greases the click collar on them, it’s an attempt to silence the click. Since it doesn’t work well they decided to call them “soft click” switches.

If you really like the feel of MX whites they are salvageable IME. You can run them through a ultrasonic cleaner to get the grease off the click collars. Which will cause them to sound just like blues or greens, but they will all pretty much sound & feel much more consistent. Then alternately you can do the “jailhouse mod” on them which will stop them from clicking all together & become a tactile switch.

New pen! The shiny brass really makes me appreciate the patina my older one has developed.

Oh wow. Laaayme.

That’s some thick-looking paint or whatever they used.

In the hierarchy of keycaps, I really can’t think of anything below “ablated paint” for a surface.

I didn’t know this, but it explains so much of what I’ve read about them.

Dark Amber T1s and Taro Balls from Cannon Keys

Looking forward to fiddling with the Taros, and I can’t get enough of the colors on those T1s.

Of note, the Ambers appear to be generously lubed from the factory - more specific deets to come once I’ve had some time with them, but I think they’re already my favorite when it comes to pure aesthetics.

The way light catches on/in them is really neat, I’m really impressed by how they look. Strong job on CK/JWK’s part.

Those T1s look badass! Haven’t been impressed by a switch color since the Gateron Inks.
