What did you get in the mail today? (Part 1)

I’d be really interested to know how those BOX Crystal tactiles stack up to the original BOX Brown.

Switches for two different keyboards I’ll be building.

I love the turquoise tealios. They are in my main driver.

Those are actually Tecsee Porcelain Blues that I got from Ringer Keys.

I do have some Tealios on order, but I foolishly purchased them with a GB keyboard, so I’m not sure if KBDFans will honor the price (pre price increase), or even have them in stock when they’re ready to ship.

See I checked back on the picture and got my left overs out and they look absolutely the same. How are thise tecsee one’s? Never heard of them?

About KBDFans and stuff alongside pre-orders; they’ve been good about that in my experience. I ordered a bunch of switches with my 67Lv1, and months later, everything arrived together. I’m guessing they set the inventory aside at time of purchase in these cases.

Man, the 980c is a different beast inside this case. Can’t wait to hear from you when you try it out. Top mounting on a large board like this feels so good to me. The only drawback is that the front edge is a bit taller (taller than the heavy 6 and the stock case). I have a sit-stand adjustable desk and lower it a bit when I use my heavy 9.

I hadn’t heard of them either, but someone posted up the ad from Ringer Keys and at .55/ea it seemed like a good deal.

Hopefully as @Deadeye says, KBDFans will make good on my order, but if not, these feel really nice and I wouldn’t be hesitant to use them.

I think we’re gonna be seeing a lot more from Tecsee TBH. Their linear Blue Velvet switches with the PME housings are excellent (beyond the stem being an extended style one, but that falls under personal preference) in my experimenting with them so far. Then those Porcelain Blues seem like a great alternate option to Tealios at their price. They’re made from the same materials as Tealios & if they are even close to the smoothness of them you can’t go wrong since they’re half the price. Plus the molds are probably fairly new so I bet the Porcelain Blues are tighter than the current Tealios available. Gonna have to pick up a pack of them before they’re gone!

I wonder if Zeal has a hard road ahead of him now that there is so much competition in his switch space (smoothness is now a standard) at drastically lower price points (even before he raised his prices). Not to mention the general loss of confidence in running boards through him.

I agree he’s definitely in a tough spot between the Xeno debacle & his switches falling out of favor due to much cheaper yet equivalent switches being readily available. Then the price hike was a huge mistake IMHO, even though I do believe it was done because he had no other choice. I don’t think it was move made out of greed or spite as everything has shot up in cost thanks to the rona lockdowns. Ultimately though I think the way he has his switches made is not viable anymore. AFAIK he owns just the molds for Zealios & Gateron produces them. So that in & of itself makes for a drastically more expensive product considering he most likely has to basically buy factory time, machine time, & labor from Gateron to get them made. When his switches were a definitive cut above the rest the extra costs & higher prices were justifiable. Nowadays though with other much cheaper switches hitting the same performance as Zeal’s I just don’t see a way forward for his type of business model.

Although take my statement with a grain of salt as I do not know any of the real details of what Zeal does & doesn’t own pertaining to the manufacturing of his switches. That is just my educated guess from what I understand of it.

I think there’s truth in this. If Zeal is going to maintain his high prices he needs to continue innovate to command a premium. Might be better to just own the molds for a limited period of time and then make them available to the larger community, similar to what Novel Keys does. Cheaper clones have essentially neutralized Zeal’s “quality” competitive advantage for the most part.

Aside from some shattered lightbulbs, today is a very good mail day:

  • Kailh Blacks - stem donors for a customer build

  • Bluish Whites - for experimenting

  • Blue Velvet tactiles - my first Tecsee branded switches

What u have in mind for this? =)

Nothing too specific, but I’m interested to see how the stems do in some other housings, and to see how the dampened bottom housing does with other stems.
