Fair points. I don’t have a whole lot of faith in the ESD protection of keyboards, so it makes me nervous using something that isn’t fully covered by USB spec.

I only know of one real case. mass. Where the board received a short circuit. And there, because of this, the RGB lighting was dying. It was id80 version 2. And there was no short circuit protection. And the board was dying from any static shock. It didn’t matter which usb or which wire.
They ended up making a new version with short circuit protection. And everything is fine.
Yes, I had her. From the first batch. Even then there was a magnetic cable. I had no short circuits or static shocks.

Alas, the extra-crusty keeb could not be saved - at least not with presently available means - so I picked up a cheap replacement to carry the switches I’d prepared for the dead one.
(Bobagum stems swapped-into harvested Outemu dust-jacket blues; hush on a budget. Kiddo can game their heart out at 2AM on a Saturday and no clickity crunch waking up Dad.)

I got 2 more sets of TX stabilizers. I was like, “oh man, I think I overdid it.” I have 8 sets now for upcoming builds. And then I was looking back over my orders… and I have 3 more sets that are supposed to arrive on Monday… and 3 sets of Staebies…
Well, I guess I’ll be set on the stabilizer scene for a good bit.

PBT Taro & Charcoal have become my workhorse sets, and are the best sets to fill that role I have ever enjoyed. I’ve had plenty of PBT Cherry profile sets, but all left something significant to be desired somewhere until those. Totally happy with those.

Mine was like that too - so I put it in the freezer. Can confirm the freezer mod works on Hi-Chews.
