What did you get in the mail today? (Part 1)

Custom keyboards have come a long way since the Whitefox/Nightfox came out.
What was a good value at that time is not anymore and Kono did not adapt to the fierce quality/price competition we see right now.

Lelelabs crystal x keycaps in blank, clear, frosted.

Quite similar to the SP Polycarbonate caps overall. I think I prefer the SP caps a bit because I prefer their texture.

These were on sale from Zfrontier and took forever to get here.

Got some Cream Soda switches from KeebHut, not enough but all they had left. Brief testing confirmed that they sound very close to Cthulhu frankenswitch I made using Ink bottom, Kailh Black v2 stem and Gateron Milky top.

UPDATE: I’ve install 20 Cream Sodas into a board with Black Lotus to test in-use and noticed similarity in sound. Like Black Lotus, Cream Soda is very poppy. Also noticed how manually tapered Kailh Black v2 stem softens the sound. I may need to stem swap bc Cream Soda bottom-out sound is a bit harsher than I like.

UPDATE2: Tried swapping stem w/ my Cthulhu. Yup. Confirmed that all you need to do is swap stem to change bottom out feel of Cream Soda. Funny thing is the two appears to be same switch with different colored stem: Ink bottom, 58g-ish long spring, Milky top. Mine is using Kailh Black v2 stem where Cream Soda appears to be a clone of NK Cream stem. All adds up to Cream Soda being an earnest remake of Cthulhu. I like that.

UPDATE3: Ordered Ink Black v2s from LumeKeebs to make Cthulhu now that I know that frankenswitch version is same as Cream Soda. Bonus: Ink top housing which I can use with source of milky top (Gateron Milky or New Nixie), combo which is sounds pretty decent.

LumeKeebs sales info:

Use coupon code FIREWORKS10 to get 10% off on all items. Sales end on July 5th.

UPDATE4: While I’ve decided to build my own, I’ve found that Cream Soda switches make ideal switch for modifiers, Enter, Tab, and Delete/Backspace keys regardless of switch type.

My Cream Soda board is easily one of the louder keyboards that I own.

Same with me. Same w/BCP. My Cthulhus are not as loud and softer though, perhaps due to tapering. A dab of lube on stem tip maybe have similar effect.

I love Cream Sodas, they’re one of my favorite linears

If you want something unique definitely consider trying the Jwick Semi-Silents, they’re very fun to use

BSUN/YOK x JWK X Switches from @Unikeys

  • POK (Polyketone) top and bottom housing
  • LY stem
  • Linear
  • Factory lubed
  • 21(ish)mm 52g spring

Pics of the factory lube on the stem:

Looks to be (a HEALTHY application of) GPL 205 :face_with_monocle:

The 21 -ish mm spring:

Looks to have a light coat of oil along the whole spring. I approve :+1::+1:

Bottom Housing:

Pins feel pretty sturdy. Housing could use film, but that can also be personal preference coming in… :person_shrugging:

Top Housing:

Stem wobble is there… Seems to be about the same for both N/S and E/W. Less than Gaterons of old…

I am going to break these in for a bit to try to get the factory lube migrated and then find a board to pop them in for a proper review, but in hand and next to my Tinnitus-afflicted ear, they feel and sound pretty good. Not as deep or poppy as the Vertex V1’s or Black Sesames I have within reach at my workbench. On the higher end of pitch between the three, but the quietest of the bunch. By sound alone, I don’t know that I could peg it as a long-pole switch, but then again, my ears aren’t as good as some of you other folks on here. :speaking_head::hear_no_evil::hear_with_hearing_aid:

At $0.46/switch USD, they are pretty reasonable for a factory lubed “exotic” material switch that has a pleasant and simple colorway.

I am in a “cooling down” phase of my linear switch journey for right now, so I hope to have some tactile reviews for you all in the coming weeks/months!

Inside China there was GB, on the RGB PSB board, for the original spring or for clones. I have a clone. Bought to test.

Summary

I also bought a microphone stand.

But it turned out that my desktop is very thick.

I had to buy another clip for a large size.

It’s all good now)

I have to say that the V1’s sound fantastic on a plateless build. I have them in my Arc60 currently, and keep going back and forth between that board and my Salvation. The V1’s just check SO MANY boxes, especially at their price point.

Went straight from the mailbox to my desk. A big shoutout to BenTen and nostyle for first making things right with those that never received their GB items. Happy that I was able to pick one up after the fact!

This was yesterday, but I got a second Tiger Lite as well as some storage containers for switches and keycaps, all from Kinetic Labs. I liked my first Tiger Lite so much that I wanted a second, it’s a great board. I’ll share pics once I’m home from work!
