How do you like them? The color is intriguing to say the least…
Haven’t put them in a board yet but I like them in a tester; they have a wide bump but it’s fairly light. More firm than a brown, but less than a Baby Kangaroo or Azure Dragon.
Perfect reference switches!
Might have to pick up some to try out, even though I am waiting on like several other pre-ordered switches
I need to order some more shelves or some organizer with cubby holes or something because right now, my switch collection is testing out the load-bearing rating of my display case…
“Pics, or It Didn’t Happen Edit”:
Was out of town this weekend
- Hiney One TKL PC mystery color
(still haven’t looked!)it’s clear, which is nice b/c that’s what I really wanted! - Geonworks 8k in silver
- Mercury65 in white
- HMKB 75% stainless steel
Another terrible photo day, yay.
a 3$ wireless mouse with a usb receiver. It’s surprisingly good, but only 1000dpi. It has some yusya switches and even the PCB is branded as yusya.
Also some JWH red switches and a single JWH black. They have a very funky housing design. They don’t have those 2 small mounting clips like normal switches, and they have a weirdly raised area around the leafs.
Also some Aristotle Cherry MX Yellows. The scratchiest switches i’ve ever tried, and even the housings feel rough and coarse, even more than regular nylon housings.
Also some 28g, 22m 2-stage springs. They feel like you would imagine a switch without any spring would feel like, if it was possible. you can barely even notice the resistance.
Wow, that’s a lot of keyboards!
I’m curious about what you’ll do on the 8k nav cluster
I got a small package from someone named Theo Kaczynski. Sounds like switches and a brass plate for my build inside. Excited to open it later!
Man, I’ve been thinking on it since the board arrived. Here’s what I’ve come up with so far:
Keep Standard TKL Layout and add some media keys
Of course, the issue with this is that the only nice keycaps with legends that will work are DSA custom sets with media key addons. Might do this because I am a fan of DSA, but not sure.
The other option for GMK and SA would be to use the standard TKL nav cluster and add in keycaps from the numpad for proper row profile. Then I would assign the media keys to those and just “know” what is what, although the legends wouldn’t correspond to the input.
This would allow me to use pretty much any set, but one negative is the tetris effect that it would cause with most sets from the color difference between the numpad and the nav cluster keys.
IDK, maybe it could look cool. I also have a few mono color kits like Rudy darkhorse and Cafe dark alphas where I could keep everything the same color.
Nav/Numpad Combo
Something like the hybrid numpad/nav cluster like on the new F77:
- Option 2 in this image seems pretty easy to do but loses add, subtract, and enter and shifts everything up so the profile is off a the top.
- Option 3 I can do with striker b/c I have a R4 enter key but I’ll have to use a R3 addition key. Also, I may get annoyed with having to use 2,4,6,8 for arrow keys and just revert to the standard position.
Mix profiles!
What if I use a GMK set and then throw on something like G20 or DSA for the media keys around the nav cluster?
All relegendables
Buy 2 sets of GMK relegendables and use them for this area. Limits my color choices and it would feel weird to use and all R1 arrow cluster.
What would you guys do?
Man, after having an F77 I wanted to make a board with exactly the same layout as the 8x, Geom beat me
So I also thought of the best layout possible for me.
I may go for Option 2, this will shift the sculpt of the keycaps upwards but this assymetry between the alphas and the nav cluster can be nice to look at.
What I would do is put the numbers on a layer and by default use the number keys as a standard TKL nav cluster (as I never look at them when editing code) .
I’ve been keeping an eye on this IC JC Studio Vintage Support Extension Set - Support Vintage Layouts! for my Frog 8k. It’s JC studios so I’m pretty sure they’re using XMI blanks. Not sure how well the colors will match with other PBT caps, but Divinikey has JC studios full sets for $39 dollars. Which isn’t too bad if you need a JC studio set to match.
very cool. I’ll be watching as well now
I’m probably going to just use a traditional nav with some numpad or all numpad for now. I’d like to try out some relegendables or a DSA set but seeing that I just bought 5 keyboards this month…
May not want to open that one
Hirose Cherry Pie?
Any difference in feel or sound from a normal Cherry housing? I have heard people swear up & down hirose are better than vint blacks. Personally I never noticed much a difference between the orange & clear hiroses vs vint blacks. Most of the ones you’ll find are your average scratchy old Cherry switch IME. Just hiroses are way more rare than any vint Cherry switch.
Another terrible Photo day.
Aiguox x Vika little Bear switches. I’m not completely sure about stem material, could be PC or POM, and i think they have a full PC housing. The listing was very vague about that. Long pole linear switches with some quite long springs and heavy factory lube. Not sure who the manu is, but they are quite similar to some BSUN switches, so it’s probably someone in that rabbithole. They have a little stem wobble but it’s okay otherwise.
CIY full POM stabs. I haven’t had a chance to test them yet to see if there is any difference in sound compared to full PC or full nylon stabs, but they seem good so far.
Milky white full POM long pole linear stems that seem to be the same as those fake burgundy stems but without the color.
Yeah not 100% sure how I’m gonna set mine up either. I know I got few GMK sets that can fill the voids with the right profiles using novelties. Although I’d eventually like to do a cross or circle arrow cluster if I can find the keys. Might have to borrow from some vintage MX compatible boards!
Where did you find the ciy stabs? They look interesting
Now that’s some surface texture
