The JC Studio is hilariously cheaper than CRP, especially on AliExpress. If you are one of those people who mod / optimize caps, then the difference isn’t even that great anyway.
What’s interesting about JC Studio, I noticed - from memory, again - is that the Aliexpress site at least sells those cool Mint Dolch accents to go along with it [or other sets.] So you can pick those up for cheap too, and they go with Desko Colour.
Got 6 Zeal Clickiez to try out. I have put them into my Ergodox Satellite fidget toy, which is now greatly improved. I am not sure about the feel for typing because they are very different from what I am used to. (Not necessarily a bad thing, just unfamiliar.) The tactile event is close to the top, about 1mm pre-travel, and it is very sharp. The switch immediately bottoms out after passing it. I might do some frankenswitch experiments with Cherry clear springs…
I did a brief experiment, swapping in a clear and a grey spring into a couple of the clickiez. It seemed to work OK, but I swapped them back so I could get used to them in their natural state.
Also learned how not to open a switch, when the housing, spring, and shaft went flying
I like the surface finish, little amount of texture but not glossy. The bottom row works for my typing style except for space that I turned backwards, for MT3 I had to have all of them backwards. I think the typing angle is 5° so it will take a bit to get used to it but I have only used them for 30 minutes so far. The fingers can rest comfortably on them
Edit: I added eva foam to space, shift, enter, backspace and control before trying them out, space has no extra filling like the doubleshot gets
That looks very nice. Are the mods a bit navy-ish or is that the light? I have to say I’d really dig a set with gray alphas and navy mods (I think GMK Stargaze has that with the alt alphas – hoping to get that at some point but it’s pretty expensive on Mekibo).
To my eyes it looks like they have a hint of blue and the alphas a hint of green. The RAL color codes are 7021 (black grey) for modifiers and 7022 (umbra grey) for alphas. I think the bad lightning may be skewing it a bit
JC studio desko black keycaps. I have a soft spot for beige/vintage keycaps so i had to get this one. I haven’t measured it, but thickness seems to be around 1.4-1.5mm, which is nice. The legends seem to be quite sharp and the alignment of them also seems pretty consistent. Now i just need to get a board to put them on.
FINALLY got the Kailh hotswap sockets that I accidentally ordered from China, so I had a longer wait than expected before I could put together a second keybird69
Yeah I was damn impressed with JC studios/Leek Bros. caps too! Honestly the at the price point the only PBT caps I’d really recommend over them are CRP. Although with some caveats, like being willing to spend triple for CRP.
Been looking forward to this one for a while. This is the beige powder coat. Either I desolder some greens I have in another board or try cleaning up some oranges I have. Interested to try waxboiling
You got yours fast! Looks lovely. I just realized that so much time has passed since I joined the GB that I don’t really have switches for it anymore, lol. I have some NoS pine whites but I was going to build an Alps Jane board for my WoB DCS caps. Looks like I need to source some more switches. I do have some orange Alps in an M0116, but I’d had to take it apart
Almost forgot to post these! A pretty interesting switch IMO, they are HMX Cloud linears from Unikeys. They’re a long pole linear designed to be full travel, well it ends up at 3.9mm but that is very hard to notice in use. The also use some novel nylon mixes (PA12 for the tops & PA 2.0 for the bottoms) for the housings & have a LY stem. They feel really nice loose too, very smooth & the springs seem to be very consistent! The housings are nice & tight so these might not benefit much from films. Also no spring or leaf noise to speak of. The only cons I found with these is the factory lube is a little inconsistent & it has just average stem wobble in the N/S directions (the wobble is minimum in the E/W direction though?). At $0.35 a pop these seem to be winners to me!
