We had an offer accepted on a house - does that count?
Are you gonna keep keyboards there?
I’ll even be able to put them on display now!
Surely the house is keyboard shaped right.
Congrats! That’s a very exciting purchase!
Was checking my drawer and found my Tada68 case inside the old KBDfans packaging. Had some good memories with it and I realized “oh yeah, on ebay there are Tada68 PCBs available since Drop shut down” and I decided why not revive this keyboard.
I may have lost some of my box white switches so I might as well get box white v2 since I still love box clickies on plastic case.
Wanted a Geon TKL for ages and I was considering going in on the F1-8X Raw GB that is ongoing. However, I noticed that they have F1-8X V2 Classic (the beige one) in stock. As a beige fan, it had to happen ![]()
And v1.1 full aluminium plate and a 1.6mm FR4 PCB too.
Tempted to try a CEM PCB, but I’ll save that for another day.
Glad I didn’t get a totally uncoated raw alu board really, I’d probably have tried to apply a clear coat myself and made a mess of it.
I’ve a ton of beige to put on it, with a load more when the recent CRP arrives. I think firstly I’ll have to put all the GMK Snail I have on it though, only seems fitting.
I think the beige is a better option as well. Their coatings are well done and it feels much nicer to the touch than raw aluminum. You really don’t have to coat raw aluminum unless you want a polished finish. I know everyone says it starts to oxidize crazy fast but I have a raw aluminum noxary 268 that is almost 10 years old and looks just like it did when I got it (except the brass weight has patina)
Cool, thanks for the pics, looks great. I remember wanting one at the time, and still do now since you reminded me
My God that brass looks amazing.
I guess it must depend a lot on environment and metal grade as I’ve got a friend with a roughly 2 year old TKL that has some quite unsightly dark marks. Rather uneven too, sort of spotty and blotchy. He’s grown to like them so I keep quiet lol.
Yours there has a lovely texture too, I’d love that but the thing that really put me off the raw F1 was seeing one that was covered in sweaty finger marks. Looked pretty bad even if I like to think of myself as low grease hehe. Beige spray will be nice and practical for sure.
I confirm what @pixelpusher said about raw aluminum.
It theorically can oxidize (white color) but only see it in practice in saline environments. It is quite common on boats and some cars for example.
For keyboards you’d need to keep it outside 24h/24h and live close to the sea, not a common use case ![]()
I did several keyboards with raw aluminum parts and they did not changed a bit in several years.
It is more the scratches that can be a concern though.
Box whites are on sale here for 16 cents each here through Sunday.
Already ordered BOX white v2 for the extra pins. Unfortunately shipping cost from US is expensive to Canada, great sale though.
Was actually thinking about these plus some 80g springs, but I am already stocked up on Navy, and to be honest even the pale blues (Navy – or maybe Jade? – springs with White clickbars) don’t quite scratch that itch. Still, the prices are very, very good.
As an side, I find it appropriate that we’ve come full circle where the default choice for a decent mid-weight clicky has a white slider. Perhaps some old Alps alumnus somewhere is smiling.
I wish I had been reading this thread at the time. There were BOX Whites for a similar price on AliExpress about a month ago, but I’m not sure the deal was still in-effect by last-week.
It’s as if retailers were getting rid of their BOX Whites at similar prices.
Sure, just unload the best light-clicky Kailh ever made, at ‘priced to go.’ [To be sure, I don’t actually know what the difference between V1 and V2 are, besides pin-numbers.]
There were some really excellent batches of V1.
If you like Box Whites, I can recommend Wuque Studio Big Lucky Clicky, they’re a bit lighter than White V2s by my touch. But they’re very smooth and less wobbly than BOX switches and also have clickbar for familiar tactility.
So now I have to pick up Gateron Grape Smoothie and WS Clicky samples!
There is a lot I like about: [Group Buy] Atelier Magnus Slate Zero Barebone Kit – GEONWORKS
However the optional, separate riser kind of kills my enthusiasm. I would almost rather have the coned feet of yester years.
This raises a pet peeve of mine. Why is it that so many vendors and designers refuse to include a couple of shots of a complete keyboard from different angles? It took me longer than I care to admit to realize what you meant about there being a separate riser. The information is there to be had, but most of the photos/renders are uncomfortably framed closeups that leave me trying to mentally synthesize a complete image.
More to the point you actually raise, I’d love to see some design put into elegant flip-out feet or risers, but I agree making it a long bar is only a modest step up from cone feet, design-wise. I guess you just sort of have to take it as a board intended for people who want zero degrees, with a sop thrown to those who don’t, similar to screwholes for cone feet, LOL.
Personally, I like flat boards if the caps I choose are unscultped, but Cherry in particular feels awful to me on a flat board, and I don’t understand targeting fans of both with one design.
I have been noticing this a lot more as well too. I will say Geon’s store listing is good, but get heavily confused by what Novelkeys does. I think it is likely a limitation of Shopify, but I agree. I have to hunt down multiple posts/listings of modern boards I am interested in to get a full idea of what is going on.
Went all-in on GMK CYL Selene and mostly-in (no numpad) for GMK MTNU Welles.
I hate the picture CK used for default picture, as it makes the base look practically green (likely due to lighting issues, as always as ever). Stupid metamerism.
