What is on your desk today?

I’ve been sort of taking a break from keyboards to make custom iPods and realized just now that some of them are pretty good matches for my keyboard…

Dude! Wow. Absolutely dig everything I’m seeing here. The classic iPod too? Dammit man. So nice buddy.

You do any tweaks to put flash storage in there? I can’t remember if I saved my broken iPod, but I am kind of tempted to rummage in some boxes at my parent’s house for a potentially fun project.

Yes they are all flash modded. There are some “rules” about how much storage different models can handle so you have to be a little careful. But the red one on the left has 128GB (the max for the 6th gen iPod Classic), the middle one has 512GB (it’s a 7th gen and so could handle up to 1TB or more but I don’t need that much). And the 4th gen on the right has 128GB. I also have a transparent 5th gen with 256GB (see below). Yes I have too many (actually I have at least one of almost every model now since I got lucky buying some lots on eBay).

is the clear one an engineering sample or some sort of aftermarket mod?

It’s just a clear case mod

Ya - all kinds of iPod mods out there. DankPods on youtube has a build video or two, plus he’s funny.

It is. It kind of reminds me of mechanical keyboards in a way although there are of course way fewer customization options available. Still, for whatever reason (largely the DankPods effect?) OG iPods seem to be having a bit of a revival at the moment. And of course they have always been popular with people who have huge media libraries, or want to listen to uncompressed music, etc.

Been rocking my 8X MkII pretty much as my daily driver for around 2 weeks now. The creams in it just keeping getting smoother & smoother with use. Then the PC plate with the 2mm case foam allows for a really nice feeling slightly bouncy typing feel. It had a good bit more bounce, even crossing into flex without the foam. Unfortunately this case just sounds super hollow without any case foam. Overall though this KB has really quickly grown on me. Never expected a KBDfans board to do that, but for all intents & purposes it’s an Ai03 board sold by KBDfans so there is that. Definitely one of my favs right now & as I’m sure most of you I have a fairly decent collection to select from. Guess I’m giving the KBD8X MkII my official seal of approval as long as you’re using a softer plate, preferably PC!

The ZAP cable from @johnatzap really completes this build!

Dude, your cable management is on point. I can’t believe I haven’t thought of center routing my cable through the monitor stand like that. Smarty pants.

Haha, thanks. Definitely one of the things I have to do with any new setup… Cables must be managed

I keep staring at the OCD looking power cables plugged into the power strip. That is some serious attention to detail.

NK65 EE with MT3 Susuwatari (and milky Gateron Caps)

After trying a couple sets, I realized the one about soot-sprites might be the most appropriate for this “fire” case color.

Edit: typing test as-shown in a noisy office

No just liked the board back when I searched for one. I tested several and ended with this. Also I think it was on sale. I do watch some eSports as white noise background and am sure I watched a few of their lol matches
